Origin & Development
9.1 Creation Myth
According to legend, the first Mystarans were born from the union of starlight and the mists of dawn, embodying the ethereal and the arcane. They believe they are children of magic itself, born from the first spells cast at the dawn of time. This origin narrative shapes their fundamental self-understanding: they are not merely users of magic but living expressions of it.
The full creation myth, as recited at each Confluence ceremony, tells how the First Light
a beam of pure creative energy from the newborn stars
descended through the primordial mists that covered the world. Where light and mist mingled, forms began to coalesce: first as flickering shadows, then as luminous shapes, and finally as beings of flesh and spirit who carried within them the essence of both illumination and mystery. These were the Primevals, the first Mystarans, and their names are recorded in the oldest Memory Crystals: Aethon, who first spoke the language of magic; Luminara, who first perceived the ley lines; Nocthiel, who first walked the dream-roads; and Velisandre, who first understood that magic was not a force to be wielded but a conversation to be joined.
9.2 Societal Evolution
Over time, the Mystarans developed their magical abilities and built their society around the pursuit of mystical knowledge. Their culture evolved around the study and mastery of magic in all its forms, developing unique abilities related to spellcasting, enchanting, and divination. As the Younger Races spread across Landorya and discovered the power of magic, the Mystarans were among the foremost contributors to the founding of great schools of magic and the advancement of arcane understanding.
9.3 The Age of Magic
During this pivotal era, magic became increasingly integrated into the daily lives of Landorya's people. The Mystarans were central figures in this transformation, pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible and attracting students and scholars from across the world. The study of magic led to great advances in knowledge, but also to the creation of powerful and dangerous artifacts, and the increasing use of magic attracted the attention of otherworldly entities.
9.4 The Age of Strife
In the aftermath of the Celestial War, tensions boiled over into open conflict. The use of magic became increasingly regulated and feared as the destructive potential of unchecked arcane power became clear. The Mystarans, while largely uninvolved in the military conflicts, were deeply affected by the backlash against unregulated magical practice. It was during this era that the Mystarans retreated fully behind their mists, establishing the defensive protocols and isolationist policies that persist to this day. The Great Withdrawal, as it is known in Mystaran histories, was orchestrated by then-Arch-Sage Meridion the Prudent, who foresaw that the world's growing fear of magic would lead to persecution if the Mystarans remained visible.
9.5 The Age of Enlightenment
As the people of Landorya recovered from past upheavals, a new spirit of inquiry emerged. The Mystarans thrived in this era, contributing to the establishment of great libraries, universities, and centers of learning. The pursuit of knowledge raised new ethical and moral questions about the proper use of magic and the responsibilities of those with power.
9.6 Challenges and Triumphs
The Mystarans have faced threats from those who fear their power or seek to steal their magical secrets, but have always prevailed through their wisdom and mastery of the arcane arts. Their greatest challenge has always been internal: the temptation to push magical boundaries too far and the risk of magical disasters that could harm both Mystara and the wider world. The most infamous such event was the Shattering of the Third Eye
an experiment conducted by a group of renegade Mathemagicians who attempted to calculate the exact mathematical structure of reality. The experiment resulted in a localized collapse of dimensional barriers that took decades to repair and led to the establishment of the strict ethical oversight protocols still enforced by the Ministry of Arcana.
