Geography
The Grand Amphitheater occupies a natural bowl in the canopy structure of the Songwood district, with seating grown from shaped branches rising in concentric tiers around a central performance space at the bowl's lowest point. Calador Starbow's position at the center can be heard clearly from every tier, including the highest, without amplification — the acoustic shaping of the surrounding growth is precise enough to compensate for the outdoor environment's typical sound diffusion.
Climate
The amphitheater is open to the sky above, sheltered on its sides by the canopy of the Songwood district trees. Evening performances take place under stars when clear, and under the bioluminescent glow of the surrounding forest organisms on overcast nights — a quality of light that longtime attendees argue enhances rather than diminishes the experience. Rain is the only weather event that interrupts performances, and even then, Calador Starbow has been known to continue singing as the audience takes shelter in the structure's natural eaves.

History
The Grand Amphitheater was grown over a period of two centuries, its current acoustic properties the result of incremental Greenspeaking adjustments by practitioners working across multiple generations, each guided by the performance feedback of the Lore-Bards who used the space before the adjustments were complete. Calador Starbow has performed here for over a century and knows its acoustic properties more intimately than any Greenspeaker — he is said to tune his voice to the specific resonances of the space each evening before the audience arrives.
Legend & Lore
On one occasion in living memory — during the Festival of Ancestral Spirits, on the night when the bioluminescence peaks and the boundary between living and dead is held to thin — Calador Starbow sang a fragment of a song so old that the trees surrounding the amphitheater responded visibly: leaves trembling without wind, bioluminescent organisms flaring to brilliance for a sustained moment, and several audience members reporting the sensation of other presences gathering at the amphitheater's edges. Calador has not sung that fragment again and speaks of the occasion with a mixture of wonder and fear. It was the first time he considered that the Song of Pre-Dawn might be more than a historical curio.
Life & Culture
The Grand Amphitheater is the most reliably populated public space in Heartwood after the central gathering platform. Each evening's performance draws audiences whose composition shifts by season — visitors from other Groves attending during festival periods, the full population of Heartwood turning out for the Solstice Ceremony performance, and on ordinary nights the city's residents who need no occasion to gather and hear the old songs. Calador Starbow performs regardless of audience size, holding that the songs must be sung whether three hundred elves or three are present to receive them.
