The Grove occupies the northern third of the Eldris Forest, transitioning from the dense ancient canopy of the forest's interior to increasingly spaced trees as elevation rises toward the mountain threshold. Rock outcroppings become common through the understory, and the root networks of Thornhaven's trees grip them tightly, giving the grove an unusually rugged floor. Several mountain streams descend through the grove on their way to the forest's deeper watercourses, carving small gorges that Ranger patrols use as natural corridors.

Thornhaven Grove is the coldest and windiest of the Groves, exposed to mountain weather systems that the Eldris Forest's interior magic only partially moderates. Winters bring snow to the northern reaches, ice forming on the branches of trees that stand sentinel at the forest's edge. The transitional seasons are sharp and brisk, and even high summer carries a persistent mountain chill that sets Thornhaven apart from the golden warmth of Heartwood. Oaken Stormheart's weather-working provides some mitigation, but the Grove's frontier character is fundamental to its ecological and cultural identity.

A recurring tale in Thornhaven holds that during the ancient catastrophe that Elenia the Greenweaver healed, a portion of the Eldris Forest north of Thornhaven was entirely consumed — not by fire or axe, but by something that entered through the mountain passes and unmade the trees' living essence, leaving only bare stone. The northern boundary of the current forest, Lore-Elders say, marks exactly the point at which Elenia's healing working arrested the destruction. Some Rangers who have served long years at the frontier claim to hear, on still winter nights, the silence where those trees should be breathing.

Life in Thornhaven Grove is shaped by vigilance. The settlements here are smaller and more defensible than those at Heartwood, their tree-homes positioned with tactical awareness as much as aesthetic sensibility. Ranger rotations are frequent, with patrol schedules maintained year-round regardless of season.
