Fauna, Companions & Familiars
15.1 Primary Fauna
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Primary Fauna | The Eternal Twilight realm teems with creatures shaped by ambient magic. Key species include: - Glimmer-Stags - majestic cervids with antlers of crystallized light; they roam the Moon-lit Glades and are considered sacred. Harming one is a grave offense. - Mist-Foxes - small canids that can dissolve into vapor at will; they serve as scouts for the Glimmerguard and are prized companions. - Twilight Owls - large raptors with eyes that pierce all illusion; they carry messages across the realm and can navigate the Dream-Weave. - Veil-Serpents - translucent snakes capable of phasing through solid matter; they guard Crystal-Veil Caves and are territorial. - Star-Moths - luminous insects that feed on ambient magic, leaving trails of starlight; their cocoons yield Star-Thread, a material used in the finest Veil-Silk. |
15.2 Familiars & Companions
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Familiars & Companions | Many Fey form lifelong bonds with a Twilight Familiar—a creature attuned to their personal Weave-signature. The bonding occurs through a Rite of Reflected Souls, where a Fey and an animal share a dream simultaneously. Bonded familiars can communicate telepathically with their companion, sense danger on their behalf, and amplify specific magical abilities. Common familiars include Mist-Foxes (for scouts and diplomats), Twilight Owls (for scholars), and Glimmer-Stags (for Elder Seers, though this bond is exceedingly rare). |
15.3 Mythic Creatures
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Mythic Creatures | - The Pale Hart - a singular, white Glimmer-Stag said to appear only during the Shadow-Wane Gleam. Sighting it is an omen of great change. - Veil-Drakes - small, semi-draconic creatures that dwell in the Crystal-Veil Caves; not true dragons but distantly related, they breathe condensed twilight rather than fire. - The Whispering Wyrm - a serpentine entity rumored to live beneath the Heart-Stone; it is said to be the first creature born from the Veil-seed's excess energy. |
15.4 Ecological Role
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Ecological Role | Fauna in the Fey realm are integral to the Weave's health. Star-Moths pollinate Echo-Lilies, Glimmer-Stags prune Lumen-Willows by feeding on their lower branches, and Mist-Foxes disperse Shade-Moss spores. The ecosystem is self-regulating but can be disrupted by Weave-tears, making environmental stewardship critical. |
15.5 Rare & Endangered Species
Several species within the Fey realm are considered endangered, tracked carefully by the Ministry of Growth & Renewal:
- Crystal-Wing Butterflies — tiny insects with wings of crystallized Veil-energy. They were once common but suffered population collapse during the Unseelie Schism when the resulting Weave disruption shattered many of their delicate wings. A breeding program at Moonpetal Grove has slowly restored their numbers.
- Deep-Root Beetles — large, armored insects that bore through the roots of ancient trees, aerating the deep soil and distributing nutrients. Their decline in the Crystal-Veil Cave region has been linked to Veil-Serpent territorial expansion, prompting the Ministry to establish protected tunnels for beetle migration.
