10.4 Linguistic Registers

The Twilight Tongue has several distinct registers:

  • Common Twilight — the everyday spoken language, used in markets, casual conversation, and daily life.
  • High Twilight — a formal register used in Council deliberations, legal proceedings, and diplomatic communications. Its tonal range is wider, and each syllable carries denser meaning.
  • Deep Twilight — a nearly extinct register used only in the oldest rituals, such as the Rite of the Ever-Gleam and the Rite of Return. It is said to be closer to the language the Celestials used when creating the Veil-seed. Only a handful of living Fey — primarily Lady Lirael and the eldest Elder Seers — speak it fluently.
  • Dream-Tongue — the non-verbal, symbolic language of the Dream-Weave, composed of images, emotions, and sensory impressions rather than words. All Fey are fluent in this language by adolescence.
