The Hollow occupies a natural ravine whose steep walls were deepened and reinforced over centuries by Mist-Mason engineering. The Thornheart Bramble palisades form concentric rings that tighten toward the garrison's core, each ring capable of independent sealing. A single narrow gate of woven living-wood faces the Drakonian border, flanked by permanent Veil-Ward emitters that scan every passing entity for true-name verification.

The ravine's depth keeps the Hollow cooler and darker than the surrounding realm, the perpetual twilight here trending toward a deep indigo rather than the softer violet of the open forest. The Thornheart Brambles exude a faint bitter scent that newcomers find unpleasant but residents claim sharpens focus. Rain, when it falls, pools at the ravine floor and drains through channels the Root-Singers have lined with filtration-moss to supply the garrison's water.

The settlement was established following the Treaty of Whispering Winds as a permanent garrison to monitor the agreed border. Its greatest test came during the Siege of Thornshade Hollow in 1189 YR, when rogue Drakonian raiders breached a weakened Fey Gate and attacked with only a skeleton garrison present. Captain Faela Thornshade organized the defense using a triple-layered Mirror-Phase illusion that convinced the raiders they faced a force ten times larger. The Drakonians retreated in disarray, and the incident led to reinforcement of all border gates across the realm. The lantern known as Ildris's Vigil has burned continuously since that siege.

Garrison folklore holds that the Thornheart Brambles remember every enemy who has touched them and will never permit the same entity through twice without explicit Root-Singer authorization. Drakonian veterans who survived the 1189 YR siege are said to have encountered bramble walls that sealed against them even in unrelated forest locations, as though the plants were coordinating across distance. The Root-Singers have never confirmed whether this is deliberate or an emergent behavior of the cultivated strain.

The Hollow's permanent population consists almost entirely of Glimmerguard personnel supplemented by Root-Singer specialists and a handful of Veil-Weavers who maintain the Veil-Ward arrays. Life is regimented by patrol rotations, drilling in the Mirror-Phase Arena, and the shared ritual of attending Ildris's Vigil each evening, where garrison members reflect silently for one turn of the light before their night duty begins. The isolation and austere conditions are considered a rite of endurance, and completing a full garrison rotation at Thornshade Hollow carries significant prestige within the Glimmerguard.
