Geography
Rising in the glacier lakes of the Ash-Vein Mountains, The Iron River descends through the dramatic Rumble-Canyons before opening into the broad navigable lower channel that runs southwest across the Ash-Vein Plains. The lower stretch is flanked by Iron-Roads on both banks, with fortified crossing-points at three key locations: the Gor-Mok Forge-Citadel docks, the mid-river Fort of Broken Stone, and the wide estuary docks of Gortha's Landing.
Climate
Upper reaches above the Rumble-Canyons freeze for two to three winter months, while the lower navigable section remains partially open due to geothermal warming from subsurface vents. The Iron Surge — the spring flood of snowmelt and iron-rich sediment — peaks at the canyon exit and is both a logistical hazard and a blessing, depositing rich ore silt on the plains flanking the river's lower course.

History
The formal name 'The Iron River' entered Landoryan common usage through Dwarven and Human trade records following the founding of Gortha's Landing in 1078 AR by War-Chief Gortha Three-Scars. The Orcish name Gor-Drak-Shan predates written records and appears in the earliest runic tablets of the Runic Age. The river formed the eastern boundary of the territories contested during the Sylvan Skirmishes and remains a natural border recognized by all neighboring civilizations.
Legend & Lore
The Song of Gor-Mok describes the first Orc striking the earth with the Celestial Hammer, releasing a vein of pure iron that flowed as a river of liquid metal before cooling into the mountain range and the waterway that now bears its echo. The Iron River is considered by Orcish shamans to be a living relic of the world's first forging, and Stone-Keepers who meditate beside its waters are said to hear the original hammer-strike still resonating in the current's low frequencies.
Life & Culture
The Iron River defines the rhythms of every settlement along its banks. Barge crews depart at dawn, reading the river's surface tension and color gradients to gauge the iron-sediment load — a high ochre saturation means a rich storm-runoff bringing new ore deposits to the canyon floor, worth reporting to the nearest mining Sector-Keeper. At Gortha's Landing, the dockside market opens at the sound of the first barge bell and closes when the last vessel moors for the evening, the river itself serving as the settlement's clock.
