Geography

The Iron-Roads radiate from Kragthar Hold as the central hub, extending northeast to the Dwarven border along the Ironspine Trail, southeast to the Drakon frontier via the Ember Road, and west to Gortha's Landing along the River Road. The Highland Passes traverse the upper reaches of the Iron-Vein Range, connecting smaller clan settlements to the main network via graded switchback routes engineered for laden pack-beasts.

Climate

Winter snowfall closes the Highland Passes for one to two months annually and reduces Iron-Road speed for all but the heaviest sled traffic. The River Route on the Iron River is disrupted by the Iron Surge in early spring and by ice in mid-winter. The Iron-Roads themselves incorporate runic heating elements at critical junctions to prevent complete closure during the coldest weeks.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 Kragthar Hub — the central road junction beneath Kragthar Hold's outer gate
  • 📍 Ironspine Trail — primary route to Dwarven territory
  • 📍 River Road — overland route paralleling the Iron River
  • 📍 Runic Relay stations at each major road junction
  • 📍 Highland Pass maintenance posts staffed by Sector-Keepers year-round

History

The Iron-Roads were first laid during the Runic Age as the siege-engine program expanded and the weight of military hardware outpaced what pack-animals could carry efficiently. The project required coordination across all major clans and was the first great collective engineering undertaking predating the formal Clan Confederation. Historians credit the construction of the Transport Infrastructure as the social glue that made the Great Council of Iron politically viable — clans that could move goods and troops between each other's territories rapidly had strong incentives to maintain peace.

Legend & Lore

Orcish engineers say that the Iron-Roads can never be truly broken because the Ironspine Trail — the oldest section — was surveyed by Gor-Mok himself, who walked the route in a single night and pressed his footprints into the basalt. Where those footprints lie, the road is said to repair itself slowly after damage, drawing iron from the bedrock beneath to fill cracks and resurface sections that were shattered in war or by shifting earth.
