Language & Symbols

10.1 Languages and Writing Systems

The primary spoken language of the Sylvan Elves is Sylvan (also called the Old Tongue or Leafspeech), a melodious, flowing language that echoes the symphony of the forest. It is characterized by soft consonants, elongated vowels, and a musical cadence that mirrors birdsong and the whisper of wind through leaves. Sylvan has no harsh sounds; even commands and warnings are delivered in tones that blend with the natural soundscape.

10.2 Written Forms

  • Leafscript
The primary written form, inscribed on bark-scrolls, woven into tapestries, or etched into living wood. Characters are flowing, organic curves that resemble the veins of leaves and the branching patterns of roots.
  • Rootsong
A deeper, more ancient form of the language used only in sacred rites and communion with the Great Oak. It is said that Rootsong is not truly a spoken language but a vibration felt in the chest and heard by the trees.
  • Greenspeech
A non-verbal form of communication used between Greenspeakers and plants, consisting of subtle magical impulses, scent-signals, and the laying of hands upon bark.

Writing is traditionally done on bark-scrolls using plant-based inks or is woven directly into living tapestries that grow and change over time. The Hall of Memories preserves the most important texts.

10.3 Symbols and Iconography

The most sacred symbol is the Oakheart
a stylized tree with roots and branches forming an unbroken circle, representing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Other motifs include the Crescent Moon (associated with Moonweaving and the Moonlit Stag), the Silver Hawk (guidance and protection), the Interwoven Leaf (community and interconnectedness), and the Eternal Bloom (the preciousness and resilience of life). These symbols appear in tapestries, carved into living wood, woven into garments, and painted on the faces of elves during festivals and rituals.

10.4 Names and Naming Conventions

Sylvan Elf names typically draw from elements of the natural world
trees, stars, rivers, animals, and seasons. A name is not chosen by the parents but bestowed by an elder Greenspeaker during the Naming Ceremony, based on the forest's response to the newborn. Common name elements include "Ael-" (star), "Thal-" (leaf), "Myr-" (song), "Gal-" (friend), "Lor-" (wisdom), and "-iel" (light), "-on" (strength), "-il" (grace). An elf's full name includes their given name, their companion tree's species, and their Grove of origin
for example, "Aelindra of the Silver Birch, Deeproot Grove."
