Environmental Protection & Ecology
Environmental stewardship in Caelum is not merely ethical preference but structural necessity: the carrying capacity of the sky-islands is finite and closely monitored by the Ministry of Celestial Affairs in coordination with island governors. Population limits per island are enforced with unusual directness — not by coercive measures, but by the physical reality that an island whose total weight exceeds the tolerance of its Skyanchor Pylon enchantments will begin to descend, slowly at first and then catastrophically. This constraint gives every Aeriel community a direct, visceral stake in not overcrowding or overburdening their island.
The weather-management systems that protect Caelum's agricultural plateaus from the worst storm-cells represent the single largest ongoing environmental intervention practised by any Aeriel institution. The aeromantic teams that manage this system — working under the Ministry of Sky Defense's weather operations division — are required to file quarterly reports on storm deflection patterns and their projected impact on surface-world weather downstream of Caelum's position. These reports are reviewed by the Ministry of Celestial Affairs for diplomatic sensitivity and, where significant impacts are detected, shared with affected civilizations through the Aerial Exchange Programme as a goodwill gesture.
On the islands themselves, the thin soils are managed with an intensity that surface-world agriculturalists would find remarkable. Every scrap of compostable material is returned to the growing plots; wind-pattern studies guide the placement of windbreaks to protect crops from the most damaging gusts; and the aetheric mineral content of island bedrock is monitored annually, as depletion would reduce both soil fertility and the ambient magical field on which the Skyanchor Pylon enchantments partly depend. The Ministry of Celestial Affairs considers island ecological health a matter of national security rather than environmental preference.
