Physical Characteristics
Aeriels stand between five and six and a half feet tall, their frames lean and hollow-boned in the manner of avian anatomy, built for the cold thin air of high altitude. Their most defining features are their great feathered wings — the primary span reaching twelve to fifteen feet in a fully grown adult — and their plumage, which covers head, shoulders, and the upper portions of arms and legs, transitioning to smooth, lightly scaled skin at the hands and lower face. Beak structures are vestigial in most lineages, manifesting as a pronounced, slightly curved ridge of the upper lip and a sharpened jawline rather than a full bird beak, though older bloodlines from the pre-Shattered Skies era retain more pronounced beaks.
Eye colouration among Aeriels follows celestial patterns: the young typically display vivid golds and azures, while those who have studied or practised magic for many decades find their irises shifting toward silver, violet, or the deep grey of storm-cloud, as if the sky itself is being absorbed into their gaze. Taloned feet provide purchase on the bare stone platforms and cliff edges of Caelum's floating islands, where conventional footwear would be a liability.
The phenomenon known as Luminesce is unique to Aeriels: an involuntary, subtle shift in feather coloration that accompanies strong changes in emotion and magical attunement. Deep blues and silver indicate calm or scholarly focus; amber and bronze signal warmth or affection; crimson and dark violet betray anger, grief, or fear. This biological transparency means that Aeriel social interactions carry a visual dimension unavailable to other races, and Aeriel etiquette places high importance on emotional composure as a mark of wisdom and self-mastery. Mastering one's Luminesce is considered a lifetime discipline rather than a social convention.
