Skills, Professions & Magic
The Aeriels are Landorya's foremost practitioners of Celestial Magic, a broad and deeply integrated tradition encompassing five primary disciplines. Astromancy is the art of reading and manipulating stellar energies — the most prestigious discipline, practiced at its highest levels only by a handful of individuals per generation. Aeromancy is the mastery of wind and air currents, and it is the most pervasive discipline in everyday life: the very islands float by virtue of sustained aeromantic enchantments, and basic aeromantic competence is expected of every adult Aeriel. Lumomancy is the shaping of light, expressed most visibly in the Stormglass Lanterns that illuminate Caelum but reaching at its highest levels into the manipulation of stellar light for communication, navigation, and directional magic. Selenomancy harnesses lunar forces, primarily for tidal and temporal prediction. Astral projection — the practice of casting one's consciousness beyond the body and into the celestial sphere — is the rarest and most dangerous discipline, practised only by senior scholars under carefully controlled conditions.
Beyond magic, Aeriel professions reflect the civilization's dual devotion to celestial observation and sky-defence. Star-Navigators chart the movements of celestial bodies and calculate their implications for weather, tides, and political events — a role that is simultaneously scientific and advisory. Skyguard officers of the Windwarden, Stormstriker, and Starshield Sentinel wings represent Caelum's military and patrol professions. Cartographers, aeromantic engineers, diplomatic couriers, and the agricultural teams managing Caelum's limited growing surfaces round out the workforce. The Celestial Academy is the sole institution authorized to certify practitioners in all disciplines, and no Aeriel may claim professional standing in any field without its endorsement, a regulation that gives the Academy extraordinary institutional influence in Caelum's governance.
