Origin & Development
The recorded history of the Mystarans is inseparable from the history of magic in Landorya, for it was the Mystarans who first systematized the study of arcane forces and who continue to serve as the custodians of the continent's deepest magical knowledge. Their origins are ancient and deliberately obscured — the Mystarans do not share their earliest histories with outsiders, and even within their own civilization, the most ancient accounts are preserved only in restricted Memory Crystals accessible solely to Conclave members. What fragmentary knowledge has reached the outside world suggests a people who emerged from the mists with their magical gifts already substantially developed, as though Mystara itself had shaped them over a primordial span beyond easy reckoning.
The oldest verified individual in Mystaran historical memory is Velisandre the Ageless, who is recorded as having lived for over eight hundred years before departing on a final astral journey from which she never returned. Whether Velisandre achieved the ultimate stage of the Thinning — a complete and voluntary transition to pure arcane existence — or whether she was lost to some hazard of the astral plane, remains unknown. Her name is invoked with reverence in Mystaran culture as the exemplar of what a life devoted to magical transcendence can achieve.
The Mist-Veil Protocol, Mystara's most devastating defensive measure, has been activated twice in recorded history. Both activations represent moments of existential crisis severe enough that the Conclave judged the dimensional destabilization of their entire homeland preferable to conventional military engagement. Both times, the invading forces were entirely neutralized without a single Mystaran fatality. The Proving of the Veil is believed to be among the oldest continuous institutions in Mystaran history, its trials said to have been designed in an age when the magical instability of Mystara was far greater than it is today, requiring candidates to demonstrate not merely power but the philosophical and emotional equilibrium necessary to wield power responsibly in an environment where thought and reality constantly interpenetrate.
