Mystaran social structure is genuinely meritocratic in a way that few other Landoryan civilizations can claim. Elevation within the Knowledge-Standing hierarchy is based entirely on demonstrated contribution to the collective arcane repository — original research, novel magical techniques, successful resolution of difficult planar anomalies, or significant diplomatic achievements that expand Mystaran access to outside knowledge. Birth family influences the specific magical affinities a young Mystaran is likely to develop, but it does not confer social advantage in itself.

The most significant social division in Mystaran society is between those who bear Psychic Marks and those who do not — the Unmarked. While the Unmarked are not formally disadvantaged and are understood to express their magic in more internalized ways, the social reality is more complex. Mystic Marks serve as a form of constant, visible communication between Mystarans — the patterns respond to emotional and magical states in ways that convey nuanced information instantaneously and without deliberate signaling. The Unmarked must rely on conventional verbal and behavioral cues in contexts where their marked peers are already exchanging rich layers of information through glyph-interaction, which can create subtle disconnections in social situations.

The Society of the Unmarked was established approximately two centuries ago to address this structural dynamic — not by seeking to change it, but by developing alternative social technologies that give Unmarked Mystarans equivalent channels of nuanced communication. The Society has also produced some of the Mystaran civilization's most significant theoretical work, precisely because the Unmarked, lacking the constant glyph-mediated social feedback that shapes the thinking of most Mystarans, have been driven to develop more explicitly systematic approaches to arcane philosophy that have often broken important new ground. Several of the most celebrated figures in Mystaran intellectual history were Unmarked.
