Physical Characteristics
Mystarans are slender and ethereal in appearance, with pale, near-translucent skin and eyes that glow with an inner luminescence that intensifies during magical channeling. Their hair runs to silver and white, their features are fine-boned and angular, and they move with a grace that many outsiders describe as dreamlike. In strongly magical environments, light seems to circulate visibly beneath their skin, tracing the paths of veins and arcane channels alike as ambient energy flows through the body's natural conduits.
Many Mystarans develop Psychic Marks — shifting, intricate sigil-like patterns that appear during adolescence and grow more complex as magical ability matures. These Arcane Glyphs are unique to each individual, responding dynamically to emotional states and ambient magical energy. They resist static documentation, confounding outside scholars who have attempted to catalogue them. Those rare individuals born without such marks, known as the Unmarked, are not stigmatized but are understood to express their magic in a more internalized, less externally visible fashion.
The most profound physical transformation occurs in Elder Mystarans who have devoted centuries to magical transcendence. These individuals undergo a process called the Thinning — a gradual dissolution of the boundary between physical form and pure arcane energy, becoming partially incorporeal and existing simultaneously in the material world and on the astral plane. The Thinning is not regarded as decay or aging; it is the natural and celebrated culmination of a life devoted to transcendence. Elder Mystarans in advanced stages of the Thinning glow faintly even in daylight, their voices acquiring a resonance that causes the air around them to vibrate sympathetically. Lifespan is measured in centuries; the oldest known Mystaran, Velisandre the Ageless, lived for over eight hundred years before departing on a final astral journey.
