Skills, Professions & Magic
Among all the civilizations of Landorya, none approaches the Mystarans in the sophistication and depth of their magical practice. For the Mystarans, magic is not a tool separate from daily life — it is the substrate of daily life itself. Their technology is, in almost every meaningful sense, indistinguishable from magic. Enchanted crystals, techno-magical devices, complex divination instruments, and prediction machines form the material culture of Mystaran settlements.
The primary magical professions within Mystaran society are the Diviners, who staff the Ministry of Prophecy and whose work ranges from routine omen-interpretation to the high-risk practice of long-range temporal perception; the Dream-Walkers, who can enter and navigate the dreamstates of both themselves and willing others, using this access for therapeutic, intelligence-gathering, and research purposes; the Veil-Weavers, specialists in the construction and maintenance of dimensional barriers and protective enchantments; and the Planar Navigators, who work under the Ministry of Planar Affairs and specialize in mapping and stabilizing the dimensional anomalies that periodically form within Mystaran territory.
The Arcane Guardians represent the martial application of Mystaran magical philosophy. Led by Sentinel-Prime Vorathis Stormveil, the Guardians rely not on conventional weapons but on layered magical defenses: illusion barriers, probability-warping wards that cause enemy strategies to unravel before execution, and direct arcane strikes as a final resort. Their doctrine is entirely defensive, premised on the conviction that the optimal outcome of any conflict is one in which the enemy never succeeds in presenting a genuine threat.
At the individual level, Mystarans possess an innate sensitivity to magical fields that members of other races must spend years cultivating through deliberate training. They can detect ley line currents, identify enchantments, and perceive dimensional thin-spots as instinctively as other races register temperature or sound. The most advanced practitioners develop a faint shimmering aura visible to the magically perceptive, and in the eldest Mystarans — those approaching the Thinning — this aura becomes an almost complete luminous envelope.
