| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Appearance & Build | Humans of mixed lineage; skin tones from sun-kissed bronze to deep amber. Eyes often amber or turquoise, a hereditary Sandsight mutation that lets them perceive subtle sand-currents and faint magical auras. Height averages 5'7"--6'2". |
| Distinguishing Marks | - Memory Crystal implanted behind the left ear (stores personal research, links to communal archives). - Constellation tattoos on forearms of senior scholars; each star marks a discipline (e.g., Orion for Astronomy, Scorpius for Sand-Weave). |
| Lifespan & Reproduction | Average lifespan 85--95 years, modestly extended by Sand-Elixir (distilled desert-bloom herbs that slow cellular decay). Births are celebrated in Khanqahs (family sanctuaries) and are often timed to celestial events; the most auspicious are the Twin Solstices when the sun and moon appear together over the dunes. |
The Sandsight Mutation
The turquoise or amber eye coloration common among the Desert Scholars is not merely cosmetic. Known as Sandsight, this hereditary trait allows its bearer to perceive the subtle magical currents that flow through granular matter. A Scholar with strong Sandsight can detect buried ruins, sense approaching sandstorms hours before they arrive, and read the faint glow of Memory Crystals embedded in walls. The mutation appears in roughly 60% of the population, with varying degrees of intensity. Those born without it can achieve a temporary version through the pollen of the Desert Lotus flower.
Dress & Personal Adornment
Beyond their robes and turbans (described in Arts & Expression), Scholars wear their rank through subtle signals. Novices bear a single unadorned Sand-Glass ring. Adepts add a second ring set with a chip of Memory Crystal. Masters wear a circlet of polished desert glass, and Grand Scholars are recognized by the Crown of Whispers
a delicate filigree headpiece that hums faintly in the presence of strong magical currents.
