Architecture & Infrastructure
21.1 Design Philosophy
Openness, airflow, and alignment with celestial events define Aeriel architecture. Structures are designed to facilitate flight, with wide balconies, open towers, and bridges of solidified wind. Every building is oriented to maximize views of specific constellations or celestial phenomena.
21.2 Building Materials
| Material | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Skytree Wood | Dawnveil Shelf forests | Structural framing, furniture, decorative carving |
| Sky Crystal | Pearlwind Atoll deposits, Starfall Plateau mines | Windows, lenses, communication devices, currency |
| Star Metal | Ore deposits on multiple islands, refined at Caelum Prime | Tools, weapons, structural reinforcement, jewelry |
| Cloud-Stone | Quarried from the dense mineral cores of older islands | Foundations, walls, defensive fortifications |
| Enchanted Glass | Manufactured at the Windwright Foundry | Observatory domes, the Hall of Horizons, temple elements |
21.3 Sky Temples
The Temple of the Four Winds (dedicated to Zephyrus, featuring four wing-like spires that catch winds from each cardinal direction, creating an ever-changing symphony of sound). The Starlight Sanctuary (dedicated to Celeste, a crystalline structure that refracts and amplifies starlight). The Solarium (dedicated to Solaris, a golden dome that captures and magnifies sunlight). The Lunar Labyrinth (dedicated to Lunara, a mysterious maze-like temple open only at night, with shifting, mist-filled passages leading to hidden chambers of ancient knowledge).
21.4 The Celestial Observatory
A grand, tower-like structure dedicated to Astraeus. It houses a vast array of astronomical instruments, star charts, and ancient tomes, and serves as a center of learning and exploration for Aeriel scholars and seers. The Observatory's crowning feature is the Astrolabe of Astraeus, a mechanical and magical instrument thirty feet in diameter that tracks every known celestial body in real time.
21.5 Transport Infrastructure
Airships (ranging from small scouts to large floating fortresses), bridges of solidified wind between islands, thermal-riding lifts, and landing platforms at key points on each island. The Breath of Zephyrus thermal column serves as a natural elevator between Caelum Prime and Cloudholm. The Skybridge Network
a system of enchanted wind-bridges maintained by aeromancers
connects all major islands, allowing non-flying visitors and cargo transport to move between them.
21.6 City Planning
Cities are built vertically, with towers ascending to catch the highest winds. Residential quarters cluster around the Celestial Academy and the Sky Temples. Public spaces are open-air by design, with retractable crystal canopies for storm protection. Streets are wide and often double as landing strips; narrow lanes are reserved for pedestrian traffic and marked with luminous starlight fern borders.
