Geography & Settlements
7.1 The Floating Archipelago
The floating islands of Caelum are anchored by air magic high above the surface of Landorya. The Celestial Mountains, majestic peaks that carve the skyline with their towering heights, serve as places of untold power and mystery, and the floating islands hover in their shadow. The archipelago spans roughly sixty miles from its outermost islands and contains over forty discrete landmasses, ranging from vast, city-bearing plateaus to tiny, uninhabited rock spires.
7.2 Major Islands & Cities
| Island | Size | Notable Features |
|---|---|---|
| Caelum Prime | The largest island; 8 miles across | Seat of the Aether Council, location of the Celestial Academy and the Sky Temples. The political and cultural heart of the Aeriel civilization. |
| Windspire Isle | Medium (3 miles) | Home to the Windwright Foundry and the Skysilk Weavers Guild. Known for its towering wind-catching spires that power weaving looms. |
| Starfall Plateau | Medium-large (5 miles) | The highest island in the archipelago. Location of the Grand Observatory and the Archive of Celestial Cartography. Offers unobstructed views of the entire sky. |
| Cloudholm | Medium (4 miles) | The main trade and visitor island. Contains the Skygate Reception Hall, merchant quarters, the Airship Dockyards, and the Peregrine Market. |
| Mistreach | Medium (3 miles) | A lower-altitude island perpetually wreathed in mist. Home to cloud caterpillar farms and rare botanical gardens. Produces most of Caelum's skysilk. |
| Pearlwind Atoll | Small cluster (1 mile total) | A ring of tiny islets surrounding a central open-air amphitheater used for the Starfall Symposium. Rich in sky crystal deposits. |
| Dawnveil Shelf | Small (2 miles) | A forested island where skytrees grow to their greatest height. Source of most construction timber. Home to a community of woodcrafters and herbalists. |
| Vortex Rock | Tiny (0.5 miles) | A barren, wind-scoured spire used as a Skyguard training ground and watchtower. The most exposed position in the archipelago. |
7.3 Districts of Caelum Prime
| District | Description |
|---|---|
| The Pinnacle | The highest terrace of Caelum Prime, housing the Aether Council chambers and the Archon's residence. Accessible only by flight or invitation. |
| Scholar's Reach | The district surrounding the Celestial Academy. Dense with libraries, lecture halls, dormitories, and research workshops. |
| Temple Quarter | Contains the four Sky Temples (see Section 21), the Starlight Sanctuary, and the Celestial Observatory. A place of worship and meditation. |
| Windmarket | The commercial heart of Caelum Prime. Open-air stalls and tower-shops sell everything from sky-fruit to star-metal jewelry. |
| Nestward | The residential quarter. Multi-generational family dwellings built into the island's natural contours, with wide balconies and nesting alcoves. |
| The Galeyard | A broad, open platform on the island's eastern edge where Skyguard patrols launch and airships dock for internal transit. |
7.4 Climate & Weather
The high-altitude climate is cool and windy, with frequent clouds and occasional sky-storms. Temperatures vary sharply between the sun-warmed surfaces of the islands and the open air beyond their edges, where powerful thermals and crosswinds create challenging but exhilarating flying conditions. Average temperatures on island surfaces range from 5 to 18 degrees Celsius depending on season and altitude, while open-air temperatures between islands can plummet below freezing during winter nights.
7.5 Sacred Sites & Landmarks
Key locations include the Celestial Academy (the center of learning), the Aether Council chambers, the Sky Temples and Celestial Observatories (detailed in Section 20 and 23), and the various floating islands each governed by a local administrator. The architecture of Caelum is a testament to the Aeriels' mastery of air magic: entire structures are held aloft by enchantments woven into their foundations, and bridges of solidified wind connect island to island.
| Landmark | Location | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| The Hall of Horizons | Caelum Prime, The Pinnacle | The grand meeting hall of the Aether Council. A domed chamber of transparent sky crystal offering a 360-degree view of the archipelago. |
| The Archive of Celestial Cartography | Starfall Plateau | The largest repository of star charts, navigation logs, and astronomical records in Landorya. Contains maps dating back to the First Age. |
| The Windwright Foundry | Windspire Isle | The primary manufacturing center for skysilk textiles, star-metal tools, and airship components. |
| The Stormwatch Bastion | Vortex Rock | The outermost defensive fortification of Caelum. A tower of reinforced cloud-stone bristling with ward crystals and manned by Skyguard Sentinels. |
| The Breath of Zephyrus | Between Caelum Prime and Cloudholm | A natural phenomenon: a permanent column of warm, spiraling updraft said to be the exhalation of the Lord of Winds. Used as a thermal elevator between islands. |
| The Lunar Grotto | Mistreach, underground | A natural cave within Mistreach's core where moonlight penetrates through crystal veins in the rock. Used for Moonlight Meditation and selenomantic study. |
