Culture & Society

8.1 Demographics

Aeriel culture revolves around the pursuit of knowledge, particularly astronomy and air magic. The Aether Council and the scholars of the Celestial Academy have the greatest influence on Aeriel culture.

Aeriels have a relatively small population concentrated on the floating islands. They have low birth rates but long lifespans. The total population is estimated at approximately 12,000, distributed across the archipelago with roughly 4,000 residing on Caelum Prime alone. Population growth is slow and deliberate; the Aeriels have never pursued expansion, viewing quality of life and depth of knowledge as more important than numerical strength.

8.2 Core Values & Beliefs

Core beliefs and values include:

  • Harmony with Nature: Aeriels seek to live in balance with the sky and the stars, taking only what they need and preserving their environment.
  • Community and Cooperation: Aeriel society emphasizes the importance of working together for the greater good of all.
  • Spiritual Beliefs: Aeriels believe in the divinity of the stars and the celestial bodies, which they see as guides and sources of wisdom.
  • Ethical Principles: Truth, knowledge, and wisdom are the highest virtues in Aeriel culture. Deception is heavily frowned upon.
  • Vision for the Future: The Aeriels strive to unlock the secrets of the universe and to use that knowledge to guide Landorya toward a future of harmony and enlightenment.

8.3 Innovation & Public Priorities

Aeriel society is highly cooperative, with everyone contributing to the community based on their abilities and interests. Public priorities include sustainable living on the floating islands, innovation in celestial research and air magic applications, and cultural diversity through exchange with scholars from other races. Aeriels value intellectual pursuits and magical research. New discoveries are celebrated and quickly integrated into society.

8.4 Education

Education is highly valued, with all young Aeriels attending the Celestial Academy. Higher studies involve apprenticeships with master scholars. The head of the Celestial Academy is Orenna Nightquill, a 298-year-old astromancer and author of the definitive treatise On the Movement of Distant Stars. Under Orenna's leadership, the Academy has expanded its exchange program, accepting a small cohort of non-Aeriel scholars each year.

Aeriel education in the magical arts emphasizes celestial magic. Formal schooling is rare; learning is often done through apprenticeships and participation in celestial ceremonies. The Academy curriculum spans seven years of foundational study (astronomy, aeromancy, history, linguistics, and natural philosophy), followed by a variable-length specialization under a master scholar.

8.5 Social Norms & Etiquette

Aeriel social interaction is governed by a tradition of quiet courtesy. Raised voices are considered deeply disrespectful except in emergencies. Greetings involve a slight bow with wings partially extended
the degree of extension indicating the level of respect offered. Elders are always addressed by their full name and title. Interrupting a speaker, especially during scholarly discourse, is one of the few social transgressions that can result in formal censure.
