Economy & Craft
14.1 Currency System
| Denomination | Material | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zephyr | Pressed sky crystal, circular, inscribed with value runes | Base unit (1) | The common currency for daily transactions. Small, lightweight, easily carried. |
| Gale | Polished sky crystal with silver star-metal inlay | 10 Zephyrs | Used for moderate purchases: artisan goods, skysilk bolts, a week's provisions. |
| Strato | Star-metal disc with an embedded sliver of luminous crystal | 100 Zephyrs | The currency of major transactions: airship purchases, property, inter-island trade contracts. |
| Archon's Mark | Rare, palm-sized sky crystal token bearing the Archon's seal, enchanted against forgery | 1,000 Zephyrs | Reserved for institutional transactions, inter-civilizational trade, and treasury operations. Rarely seen in common circulation. |
Aeriels use a barter-and-credit system anchored by Sky Tokens (the collective term for all denominations), small discs of pressed sky crystal inscribed with value runes. High-value exchanges are recorded in enchanted ledgers at the Celestial Academy. Credit arrangements between established merchants are common, with the Academy's ledger-keepers serving as neutral arbiters of debt and repayment.
14.2 Core Crafts & Industries
| Industry | Description | Primary Location |
|---|---|---|
| Skysilk Weaving | Production of skysilk fabric from cloud caterpillar threads. The most valuable textile in Landorya. | Mistreach, Windspire Isle |
| Star-Metal Smithing | Forging of tools, instruments, jewelry, and weapons from star-metal ore. | Caelum Prime (Windmarket district) |
| Astronomical Instrument Making | Precision crafting of telescopes, astrolabes, sextants, and star-chart crystals. | Starfall Plateau |
| Airship Construction | Design, building, and enchantment of skycraft ranging from single-Aeriel scouts to cargo haulers. | Cloudholm (Airship Dockyards) |
| Featherwork | Decorative and functional items made from shed Aeriel feathers and sky-creature plumage. | Caelum Prime (Nestward district) |
| Crystal Communication Devices | Resonance crystal pairs for long-distance messaging. | Pearlwind Atoll |
| Weather-Control Calibration | Maintenance and tuning of the weather-prediction and control systems that safeguard airspace. | Starfall Plateau |
14.3 Exports & Imports
Exports: Celestial maps, sky silk, magical feathers, astronomical instruments, star-metal tools, weather prediction almanacs, enchanted crystal communication devices.
Imports: Metals, ground goods, foodstuffs (grain, meat, root vegetables), timber, gemstones, alchemical reagents from surface realms.
14.4 Trade Routes & Logistics
Aerial trade lanes connect Caelum to Eldorian, Celestial Order, and Drakonian territories. Airship caravans make regular runs along established sky corridors. High-altitude trade routes are a strategic advantage, as they are largely inaccessible to ground-based raiders. The primary trade hub is Cloudholm's Peregrine Market, where foreign merchants rent stalls and conduct business under Aeriel trade law.
14.5 Guilds & Institutions
| Guild / Institution | Role | Headquarters |
|---|---|---|
| Skysilk Weavers Guild | Regulates silk production, quality standards, and export quotas. Controls cloud caterpillar farming licenses. | Windspire Isle |
| Star-Metal Smiths Guild | Oversees star-metal mining, alloy formulas, and forging standards. Maintains the Forge-Hall on Caelum Prime. | Caelum Prime |
| Cartographers Circle | Produces and certifies all official celestial maps and navigation charts. Works closely with the Celestial Academy. | Starfall Plateau |
| Airship Engineers Association | Licenses airship builders, inspects craft for safety, and manages the Cloudholm Dockyards. | Cloudholm |
| Celestial Academy | Oversees scholarly output, intellectual property, and higher education. Also manages enchanted ledger-keeping for the economy. | Caelum Prime |
| Merchant Collective of Cloudholm | An association of trade brokers and shop owners on Cloudholm who coordinate with foreign merchants and manage the Peregrine Market. | Cloudholm |
14.6 Economic Challenges
The Aeriel economy is constrained by the small population and the limited agricultural capacity of the floating islands. Caelum can produce sufficient sky-fruit and windwheat to feed approximately two-thirds of its population; the remaining third relies on imported foodstuffs. This dependence on ground-level trade partners is the Aeriels' greatest economic vulnerability and a persistent topic of debate within the Aether Council.
