Physical Characteristics
Nereids are immediately distinguishable by their pearlescent, scale-covered skin, which shifts in color and iridescence depending on mood, age, and magical attunement. Young Nereids typically display soft blues, greens, and lavenders; warriors and those under stress exhibit deeper navy and steel-grey tones; while elders who have achieved deep spiritual harmony glow with warm rose-gold or silver-white. The most revered physical state is Deepglow — a condition in which the entire body emanates a steady, warm bioluminescent radiance, visible across considerable distances in the deep sea. Nereids who develop Deepglow are regarded as oracles and counselors, their luminescence interpreted as profound attunement to the ocean's primal forces.
Physically, Nereids are slender and hydrodynamic, built for graceful movement through water. Their fingers and toes are delicately webbed, granting them exceptional dexterity both for fine craft work and for navigating strong currents. Gill slits along the neck function in tandem with lungs, allowing Nereids to breathe air when surfaced and water when submerged without transition discomfort. Their eyes are large and adapted for low-light vision in the deep ocean, with an additional transparent membrane that protects the eye from pressure and particulate matter during deep dives.
Perhaps the most remarkable physiological feature is the Tidal Resonator — a specialized inner-ear organ unique to Nereids. This structure senses minute changes in water pressure, current direction, and distant seismic activity, granting them near-supernatural battlefield and environmental awareness. It also makes Nereids extraordinarily sensitive to sound, which in part explains the prominence of music in their culture. Nereids live between three and four hundred years, raising modest families of two to four children. As they age, their bioluminescence intensifies, their scale patterns grow more elaborate, and their mastery of water magic typically deepens.
