Daily Life
The rhythm of daily life in Nereidum is shaped by the tides, the ocean's light cycles, and the arts. A typical Nereid city awakens gradually, its bioluminescent lighting shifting from the cool blues of night to the warmer greens and golds of morning as cultivated organisms respond to programmed light cycles maintained by Coral Cultivators. Citizens move through coral-grown streets to their duties, whether tending the living architecture, working within one of the three ministries, serving in the Coral Guard, or practicing their craft in the city's many art spaces. The water is rarely silent; Nereids sing habitually and unselfconsciously, their voices carrying through the currents the way surface people might hum while working.
Daily schedule: At first tide-shift, the city awakens to the communal Morning Current — a brief group song performed by neighborhood clusters that serves simultaneously as greeting, weather report (delivered in harmonic changes that signal current conditions), and ecological check-in. This is followed by the primary work period, which for most Nereids involves both ecological duties and artistic practice, the two being inseparable in Nereid philosophy. Midday brings a communal meal period in open coral plazas, where food drawn from sustainable ocean harvests is shared and informal social bonds are maintained. The afternoon is typically reserved for apprenticeship and teaching. Evening brings the Vesper Current — a second communal song that closes the working day and transitions the community into social time: music gatherings, dance performances, oral storytelling, and the Tidal Hearing sessions where ongoing disputes are adjudicated.
Food: Nereids practice entirely sustainable ocean harvesting, overseen by the Ministry of Undersea Resources. Diet includes cultivated kelp and algae, sustainably harvested shellfish and small fish species, geothermal-heated mineral broths, and bioluminescent fungi grown in specially maintained cave systems. Fermented sea-vegetable preparations are a delicacy reserved for festivals.
