Nereid society is organized around merit, artistic achievement, and demonstrated ecological commitment rather than hereditary rank or accumulated wealth. Birth into an artistically prominent family provides social advantage through access to better mentorship and established community networks, but the Pearl Court's meritocratic selection process means that the highest positions of authority are genuinely open to those of exceptional talent regardless of family origin. This creates a social culture that values visible effort, creative risk-taking, and public contribution to community life.

Family structures: Nereids form long-term paired bonds of deep emotional commitment, typically raising between two and four children across their three-to-four-hundred-year lifespans. Extended family networks are important social units, but community affiliation — one's neighborhood coral district, one's guild, one's artistic cohort — is often of equal or greater practical importance for daily social life. Nereids who excel in their crafts often become the gravitational center of informal networks of apprentices, collaborators, and admirers that function as secondary families.

Age and the Deepglow: As Nereids age and approach the later centuries of their lives, the most spiritually attuned among them develop Deepglow — the full-body bioluminescent radiance that marks profound integration with the ocean's primal forces. Deepglow elders are sought out as counselors, oracles, and teachers. Their radiance is visible across great distances in the deep sea, and their counsel carries weight that younger, more brilliant individuals rarely match. The reverence shown to Deepglow elders is one of the most consistent and universal features of Nereid culture across all of Nereidum's settlements.

Social interaction norms: Nereids greet one another with brief sung phrases rather than spoken words — a practice so deeply ingrained that speaking a greeting without melody is considered a sign of emotional distress or extreme haste. Disagreements are expected to be managed through creative expression before escalating to formal Tidal Hearing; a Nereid who immediately seeks legal remedy without first attempting artistic resolution is viewed with some social disapproval.
