Origin & Development
The Nereids are numbered among the original races of Landorya, brought into existence by the Celestials in an age before recorded surface history. Their creation was tied intrinsically to the health of the world's oceans: the Celestials understood that the sea required stewards of intelligence and magical aptitude, and so the Nereids were shaped as the ocean's guardians from the very first moments of their existence. This divine commission — to maintain the balance and harmony of the marine world — has never been abandoned and remains the animating purpose of Nereid civilization today.
Creation myth: In the beginning, the Celestials looked upon the primordial ocean and saw that it was vast and powerful but directionless, its energies cycling without purpose or memory. They drew from the deep currents a living essence and breathed into it the gifts of form, song, and wisdom, and the first Nereids rose from the water already singing — their first sound a harmonic chord that set the great tidal cycles into motion. From that moment, the Nereids understood themselves to be part of the ocean's mechanism, not merely its inhabitants.
Historical ages of development: The Age of First Song saw the founding of Nereidum as a loose confederation of reef communities united by shared ecological values. The Age of the Pearl Court formalized governance under the Speaker of the Tides. The Age of Deep Expansion pushed Nereid settlements into the abyssal zones, requiring new physiological adaptations and new technologies. The Age of Diplomacy established the Ambassador of the Waves as a permanent institution after repeated conflicts with Drakonian territorial ambitions. The present era, called the Age of Living Memory by Tide-Readers, is characterized by increased engagement with the surface world and a growing awareness that changes in the broader world of Landorya pose new challenges to the ocean's fragile balance.
