Architecture & Infrastructure
The architecture of Nereidum is unlike anything found on the surface world. Coral Buildings — grown rather than constructed — are living structures cultivated through a patient combination of water magic and horticultural skill. They are self-repairing and adaptive, shifting subtly as the marine environment changes around them. A master coral architect like Thalassa Coralweave does not use blueprints in the surface-world sense but rather grows a structure through years of careful magical cultivation, guiding the coral's natural growth impulses toward desired forms while remaining responsive to the organism's own developmental tendencies. The result is architecture that is simultaneously more beautiful and more ecologically integrated than anything achievable through conventional construction.
Illumination throughout Nereidum is provided by bioluminescent organisms — cultivated algae, maintained anemone clusters, and trained schools of light-fish that move through designated channels. Different districts use different luminescent spectra to create distinct atmospheres: the Pearl Court district glows in cool silver-white; artisan quarters are warmer amber and green; the Coral Guard training grounds pulse in the dim red used for low-visibility tactical training.
Energy infrastructure: Tidal generators — vast mechanisms anchored in zones of strong current flow — convert the kinetic energy of ocean movement into magical power stored in pearl-matrix batteries and distributed through water-conductive channels carved into the coral substrate. Geothermal vents in the deepest settlements provide thermal energy for specialized crafting processes. Current-capture arrays positioned in major tidal zones supplement the generators during peak demand periods.
Transportation: Nereids move through their cities in open water, swimming through designated current-channels that are magically maintained to flow at consistent speeds and in predictable directions. For inter-city travel, submersible vehicles powered by water magic carry cargo and passengers through deep-water transit corridors. Current Riders mounted on Tidal Dolphins serve as the rapid-response transportation layer for emergency and military use.
