Language & Symbols
The primary language of the Nereids is Tidal Song — a fully tonal, sung language in which pitch, rhythm, and harmonic overtones carry grammatical meaning as precisely as word order does in surface languages. Tidal Song is extraordinarily expressive; it can convey emotional nuance, ecological data, and abstract philosophical concepts simultaneously in a single sustained phrase. Its spoken form carries through water over remarkable distances, which makes it both practical for communication across large reef systems and aesthetically striking to outsiders who hear it for the first time as an inexplicable beauty emanating from the deep.
Written Tidal Song uses a system called Coral Script — patterns inscribed into the living surfaces of coral, algae arrangements, and shell configurations. Unlike surface alphabets, Coral Script encodes meaning in three-dimensional spatial relationships between elements rather than linear sequences of symbols. A trained reader can extract multiple layers of meaning from a single Coral Script inscription depending on the angle and depth from which it is read. This system is self-repairing in living coral substrates, making it the preferred medium for archival records meant to endure centuries.
For communication with surface peoples, Nereids learn Common Landoryan, typically by adolescence, and the Ambassador of the Waves and diplomatic staff are fluent in multiple surface tongues. Shell-based communication devices allow instantaneous information exchange across Nereidum's breadth, transmitting compressed Tidal Song signals through the water column.
Key symbols: The Pearl signifies truth, clarity, and the Pearl Court's authority. The Current represents change, time, and the cyclical nature of existence. The Open Hand with webbed fingers signifies welcome and peace in diplomatic contexts. The Closed Spiral — a coiled shell — represents memory, ancestry, and the continuity of tradition. These symbols appear on Coral Guard insignia, Pearl Court seals, and the spiral tattoos worn by master architects and senior Tide-Readers.
