Seasonal Cycle
Nereid seasons are defined not by temperature changes — which in the deep ocean are minimal — but by the great tidal cycles, current shifts, and ecological events that mark the ocean's living calendar. The Nereids recognize four primary seasons, each with associated festivals, agricultural and harvesting activities, and spiritual obligations.
The Season of Rising Tides marks the beginning of the Nereid year. Warm surface currents push down into the middle depths, carrying nutrients that trigger explosive coral growth and the spawning cycles of many species the Nereids depend on. This season's primary festival is the Festival of the Deep Bloom — a multi-day celebration of renewal in which new coral structures are planted in ceremonial settings, young Nereids present their first original artworks to their communities, and the Tide-Readers recite the opening chapters of the foundational song-cycles before the Pearl Court.
The Season of the Great Current brings the strongest tidal forces of the year and the Rite of the Current — the ordeal that candidates for the Pearl Court must undertake alone in the Abyssal Trench. Communities gather to see candidates off and to welcome the successful ones back, and the celebrations surrounding a successful Rite are among the most joyful events in Nereid civic life.
The Season of Still Waters corresponds to the period of minimum tidal energy, which Nereids treat as a time of reflection, artistic production, and deep scholarship. The Tide-Harmony Conclave takes place during this season — an annual gathering of Pearl Court members, senior Tide-Readers, and ministry heads to review the state of Nereidum's ecological health, amend the song-cycle laws, and plan for the coming year.
The Season of the Deep Cold brings the descent of cold surface waters and triggers the bioluminescent bloom — a natural phenomenon in which vast swaths of deep ocean glow with extraordinary intensity. Nereids celebrate this with the Luminance Vigil, spending entire nights in open water, watching the light display and composing new music inspired by it.
