Environmental Protection & Ecology
The Nereids' role as guardians of the ocean is not a metaphor or a cultural aspiration — it is a practical, ongoing, institutionally organized program of ecological management that underpins everything else their civilization does. Without a healthy ocean, Nereid civilization cannot function: the food systems, energy infrastructure, building materials, and magical resources that sustain Nereidum all depend on ecological integrity. But the Nereids' commitment to environmental protection goes well beyond self-interest; it is written into the deepest layers of their theology, their legal tradition, and their social identity.
The Ministry of Ocean Harmony is the largest and best-funded of Nereidum's three ministries, employing more citizens than the Ministry of the Arts and the Ministry of Undersea Resources combined. Its responsibilities include monitoring ocean temperature, chemistry, and current patterns across all of Nereidum's territorial waters; enforcing the ecological laws encoded in the Tide-Readers' song-cycles; investigating and remedying any human-caused or magically induced environmental damage; and producing the annual Ecological Assessment that the Pearl Court uses as the primary basis for policy decisions.
Specific protections: The Coral Preservation Decree prohibits harvesting any coral without Ministry authorization and requires any architectural use of coral to involve cultivation rather than extraction. The Current Protection Statute prohibits any magical activity that significantly and permanently alters established current patterns. The Species Sanctuary system maintains protected zones within Nereidum's territory where no harvesting, fishing, or construction of any kind is permitted, providing refuges for endangered marine species and breeding grounds for commercially important ones.
Master Deep-Sea Scholar Ceto Depthscholar leads the most ambitious current project: a comprehensive mapping of abyssal zone ecology intended to provide the Pearl Court with the information necessary to manage the deepest portions of Nereidum's territory as responsibly as the better-understood shallower zones.
