Architecture & Infrastructure
21.1 Overview
| Element | Details |
|---|---|
| Design Philosophy | Frostborn architecture works with the natural ice and stone of the environment, using the insulation properties of snow and ice to create warm, livable spaces. Form follows function, with every structure designed to withstand blizzards, ice storms, and the crushing weight of accumulated snow. |
| Materials | Glacial ice (primary building material), stone from exposed rock faces, icebark wood (for interior reinforcement and furnishing), furs and hides (for insulation and partitioning), Thermal Crystals (for heating). |
| Iconic Structures | Frosthold (the largest settlement complex, built into a massive glacier), The Citadel of Eternal Ice (temple-fortress carved from a glacier), The Aurora Spire (illuminated ice tower dedicated to Aurelia), Communal Longhouses (the social heart of each clan). |
| Ice Temples & Sacred Sites | The Citadel of Eternal Ice (temple of Glacius), The Aurora Spire (dedicated to Aurelia), The Wind Caves (sacred to Boreas), The White Vale (sacred hunting ground of Skadi), The Forge of Jokul (subterranean smithing complex). |
| Infrastructure | Snow marker communication network, ice-carved roads between settlements, glacial cisterns for meltwater storage, communal food preservation chambers carved deep into glaciers where temperatures remain constant. |
21.2 Construction Techniques
Frostborn builders, known as "Isbyggare" (ice-builders), use a combination of Cryomancy and traditional engineering to construct their settlements. Large blocks of glacial ice are cut using rune-inscribed tools that produce clean, precise cuts. These blocks are then shaped and fitted together using a technique called "frost-welding," where Cryomancers melt the contact surfaces slightly and then refreeze them, creating bonds stronger than the original ice. Interior walls are often lined with compressed snow for additional insulation, and Thermal Crystals are embedded at regular intervals to maintain livable temperatures.
21.3 The Longhouse Design
The communal longhouse is the defining architectural achievement of the Frostborn. A typical longhouse measures 60 to 100 feet in length and 20 to 30 feet in width, with a vaulted ceiling supported by icebark wood beams. The central hearth, fueled by Thermal Crystals and icebark wood, provides both heat and light. Sleeping alcoves line the walls, each curtained with heavy furs for privacy. The entrance is designed as a winding passage rather than a straight doorway, preventing wind from reaching the interior.
