Language & Symbols
10.1 Language
The Frostborn language is guttural and harsh to outsiders' ears, filled with words that evoke the sounds of the ice and wind. However, it is also a language rich in description and nuance, particularly when it comes to discussing the environment and the hunt. Like many northern tongues, it contains dozens of words for different types of snow, ice, and wind conditions - precision born of necessity in a landscape where reading conditions correctly can mean the difference between life and death.
10.2 Oral Tradition
The Frostborn have a rich tradition of oral storytelling, passing down their history, legends, and knowledge from generation to generation. These stories serve not just to entertain, but to educate, inspire, and reinforce the values and beliefs that are central to Frostborn identity. Many of their stories revolve around the themes of survival against the odds, the importance of community and cooperation, and respect for the forces of nature.
10.3 Symbols & Iconography
Common Frostborn symbols include the Glacier Spiral (representing the eternal cycle of freezing and thawing), the Three Peaks (the highest glaciers of the Frostbound Wastes), and the Frost Rune (the foundational symbol of their Runecraft tradition). Clan affiliation is signified through specific patterns of beadwork and embroidery incorporated into clothing.
Each clan maintains its own heraldic symbol: the Whitepeak Clan uses a single sharp peak against a starfield; the Deepglacier Clan, a downward-pointing triangle representing their subterranean home; the Windrunner Clan, three horizontal lines symbolizing wind over open plains; the Stormwatch Clan, an eye surrounded by jagged lines representing vigilance against the storm.
10.4 Communication Systems
The Frostborn rely on a complex system of snow markers and ice sculptures for long-distance communication across the wastes. These carved waypoints encode information about game trails, weather warnings, and clan boundaries. They supplement this with runic markers that can be read by touch in blizzard conditions.
10.5 The Runic Alphabet
Beyond its magical applications, the Frostborn runic script serves as a written language for recording important information. While most knowledge is transmitted orally, certain critical records
territorial boundaries, trade agreements, sacred rites
are inscribed in runes on ice tablets and stored in the Frozen Archive near Frosthold. The runic alphabet consists of 24 primary characters, each of which also corresponds to a natural phenomenon (ice, wind, star, mountain, wolf, etc.) and carries symbolic meaning beyond its phonetic value.
