Magic & Arcane Infrastructure
23.1 Overview
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Runecraft System | The primary magical tradition of the Frostborn. Runes are inscribed onto weapons, tools, structures, and talismans to enhance, protect, or ward them. Frostborn runes specialize in ice-affinity effects and cold-resistance properties. The power of runes fades over time and must be recharged; incorrect inscription can lead to magical backlash. |
| Cryomancy | The ability to control and shape ice and snow. Cryomancers can create walls of ice, summon blizzards, and craft intricate structures from frozen water. This is the most visible form of Frostborn magic. |
| Frost Healing | The ability to use the numbing cold to dull pain, slow bleeding, and promote healing. Frost healers are highly valued in Frostborn society, their skills essential in a land where injuries are common. |
| Winter's Fury | The ability to channel the raw power of winter into attacks. Practitioners can blast enemies with icy winds, freeze them solid, or summon the icy forms of winter beasts to fight alongside them. |
| Glacial Fortitude | The ability to imbue oneself or others with the strength and resilience of the eternal ice. Those with this ability can withstand extreme cold, shrug off injuries, and even slow the effects of aging. |
| Geo-Mancy | A specialized discipline combining earth and ice magic. Frostborn Geo-Mancers can sense geological formations, manipulate stone and ice on a large scale, and read the deep structure of mountains and glaciers. Their expertise is valued even by other races. |
| Thermal Crystals | Magical crystals created through a combination of Runecraft and natural resources. These crystals radiate heat and serve as the primary heating and cooking source in Frostborn settlements. |
| Magical Education | In Frostborn communities, magical education focuses on Runecraft and elemental magic. Training is integrated into daily life, with children learning through working with their families and participating in community rituals. Apprenticeships with experienced practitioners provide hands-on training for mastering practical applications. |
23.2 The Runic Wards of Frosthold
Frosthold is protected by the most extensive runic ward network in the Frostbound Wastes. Hundreds of interconnected runes are carved into the glacier face surrounding the settlement, forming a layered defensive system that warns of approaching threats, reinforces the structural integrity of the ice, and can be activated to create barriers of magical cold so intense that even frost-adapted creatures cannot pass through them. The maintenance of these wards is a permanent duty shared by all Runecraft practitioners in the Frosthollow Clan.
23.3 Magical Limitations & Dangers
Frostborn magic, while powerful within its domain, has notable limitations. Frost magic weakens significantly in warm climates, making Frostborn mages less effective when traveling south. Runecraft requires physical materials and time
it cannot be performed instantaneously in combat situations. Cryomancy draws on ambient cold, meaning its power fluctuates with the seasons (strongest in winter, weakest in summer). Perhaps most dangerously, overuse of frost magic can cause "Glacial Creep," a condition where the caster's body begins to take on properties of ice, potentially becoming permanently frozen if not treated by a skilled Frost Healer.
