Geography & Settlements
7.1 Key Locations
- Frosthold: The largest of the Frostborn settlements, Frosthold is a sprawling complex of ice caves and stone structures built into the side of a massive glacier. It serves as the primary gathering place for the Council of Chiefs.
- The Howling Plains: This vast, open expanse is known for the constant, biting winds that sweep across it. It is a major hunting ground for the Frostborn.
- The Citadel of Eternal Ice: A massive fortress carved entirely from a glacier, serving as the main temple of Glacius and the center of Frostborn spiritual life.
- The Aurora Spire: A tall, slender tower of ice dedicated to Aurelia, illuminated from within by a soft, pulsing light mimicking the colors of the aurora during the long winter nights.
- The Wind Caves: Intricate caves carved deep into the ice by the ceaseless action of the wind, sacred to Boreas. Frostborn shamans come here to meditate and listen for the whispers of the north wind.
- The White Vale: A vast, pristine expanse of snow considered the sacred hunting ground of Skadi. Only the most skilled and respected hunters are allowed to track prey here.
- The Forge of Jokul: A subterranean complex located beneath a massive ice sheet, where the Frostborn crafters create their ice-steel weapons and tools. The forge is said to be heated by the breath of Jokul himself.
7.2 Additional Named Settlements & Landmarks
- Rimehaven: A sheltered settlement nestled in a glacial valley, known for its natural hot springs
one of the few sources of geothermal warmth in the wastes. Rimehaven serves as a rest stop for trade caravans and a place of healing, where Frost Healers use the combination of thermal waters and cold magic for restorative treatments. - The Shattered Spires: A field of towering ice pillars, some reaching over a hundred feet in height, created by ancient seismic activity. The Frostborn believe these are the frozen remains of giants who defied Glacius in the First Age. Navigating the Spires is considered a test of skill, and they serve as a natural training ground for young warriors.
- Kaldheim Outpost: The most remote permanent Frostborn settlement, positioned at the very edge of the Deep Ice. Manned primarily by members of the Stormwatch Clan, Kaldheim serves as the last outpost of civilization before the unknown north. Strange sounds and lights have been reported beyond its walls.
- The Frozen Archive: A vast natural cavern deep beneath a glacier near Frosthold, where the Frostborn preserve important records by inscribing them into tablets of permanent ice. The cavern maintains a constant temperature that prevents thawing, making it an ideal long-term repository. Elder Astrid Longmemory has been working to transcribe key oral histories into runic ice-tablets stored here.
- Vintergate: A narrow pass through the Shattered Ridges that serves as the primary overland route between the eastern and western halves of the Frostbound Wastes. Control of Vintergate has historically been shared between the Whitepeak and Windrunner clans under a centuries-old compact.
7.3 Climate & Weather Patterns
The Frostbound Wastes are gripped by a perpetual winter, with temperatures rarely rising above freezing. Blizzards and ice storms are common, and the sun is a rare sight in the sky. During the short summer, temperatures rise just enough to allow limited thawing and intensive hunting and gathering.
The Frostborn recognize over forty distinct types of weather conditions, each with its own name in their language. A "kaldvind" is a steady, bone-chilling wind without snowfall. A "hvitstorm" is a whiteout blizzard that obliterates all visibility. A "ljosbrot" is the rare break in winter clouds that allows sunlight to reach the ground, often greeted with spontaneous celebrations.
7.4 Architecture & Living Spaces
The Frostborn live primarily in structures carved out of the ice and stone of their environment. These range from small, familial ice caves to large, communal longhouses. They are masters at using the natural insulation properties of snow and ice to create warm, livable spaces. Frostborn dwellings are marvels of ice architecture, designed to provide warmth and safety in the harshest of conditions, with central hearths and ample room for gathering.
7.5 Natural Resources
The Frostbound Wastes are rich in unique resources, including:
- Ice Gems: Magical crystals that form deep within the glaciers, prized for their beauty and mystical properties.
- Frostfur: The thick, luxurious pelts of the creatures that inhabit the wastes, highly sought after for their warmth and durability.
- Frostroot: A hardy, tuberous plant that grows beneath the snow, a staple food for the Frostborn.
- Icebark Wood: From rare, twisted trees that manage to grow in sheltered valleys, prized for crafting.
- Glacial Clay: A dense, mineral-rich clay found in deposits beneath certain glaciers, used for pottery, pigments, and as a binding agent in construction.
- Snowberry: A small, tart fruit that grows on low bushes in sheltered valleys during the brief summer. Used in fermented beverages, preserves, and medicinal preparations.
- Moonmoss: A pale, luminescent lichen that grows on exposed rock faces at high altitudes. It glows faintly in darkness and is harvested by shamans for use in rituals and as a mild analgesic.
