17.2 Runecraft Mastery Levels
Frostborn Runecraft practitioners progress through recognized levels of mastery:
- Novice (Ristelaekling): Can inscribe basic single-rune marks for simple effects such as cold resistance or minor sharpening.
- Inscriber (Ristari): Capable of multi-rune combinations and can create functional runic tools and weapons.
- Runescribe (Runaskrifari): A full practitioner who can design original rune arrays, teach apprentices, and perform complex enchantments.
- Runemaster (Runameistari): The highest level, able to create permanent high-power rune arrays, combine Runecraft with other magical disciplines, and inscribe runes that draw on the ambient magical energy of the land itself. There are typically no more than two or three living Runemasters among all the clans at any given time.
The current most renowned Runemaster is Thyra Runeheart of the Deepglacier Clan, who is credited with developing a new runic array that allows Thermal Crystals to maintain their heat output for twice as long as previous designs.
17.3 Waywalking
Waywalking is a specialized profession unique to the Frostborn, combining navigational expertise, survival skills, and a touch of Geo-Mancy. Waywalkers are the pathfinders and trail-blazers of the wastes, responsible for maintaining safe routes between settlements, guiding trade caravans, and scouting new territory. They can read the subtle signs of the ice
variations in color, texture, and sound
to detect hidden crevasses, unstable ice bridges, and approaching storms. The most accomplished Waywalker in living memory is Siv Pathfinder of the Windrunner Clan, who mapped twelve new routes through the Shattered Ridges that reduced travel time between the eastern and western settlements by several days.
