Rituals & Daily Practices

16.1 Overview

RitualDescription
Morning OfferingThe Frostborn start each day with a ritual offering to the spirits, usually a small portion of their first meal. This brief ceremony, led by the shaman, involves prayers for a successful hunt or expressions of gratitude.
The Glacial RiteA coming-of-age ceremony involving young Frostborn venturing out into the icy wastes alone, armed only with a spear of ice. They must survive for a full cycle of the moon, proving their strength and resilience to the Frost Spirits. Those who return are considered full adults and are given their first ice-steel weapons.
The HowlingDuring the longest night of the year, the Frostborn gather in their ice halls to chant and sing to the howling of the north wind. This ritual honors Boreas and ensures his favor for the coming year.
The Aurora FeastWhen the northern lights are at their most vivid, the Frostborn hold a great feast in honor of Aurelia. They dance and sing beneath the shimmering curtains of light, offering up their finest furs and carvings to the goddess.
The Hunt of SkadiEach spring, the Frostborn hold a great hunting competition in honor of Skadi. The hunter who brings back the largest or most impressive kill is said to be blessed by the goddess and is given a place of honor in the tribe.
The ForgingIn the depths of winter, the Frostborn crafters gather to create weapons and tools of ice-steel, a process overseen by the priests of Jokul. The finished items are said to be imbued with the strength and durability of the Frost Spirits themselves.
Seasonal FestivalsThe routine of daily life is punctuated by seasonal festivals and celebrations marking important points in the Frostborn calendar, such as the summer solstice or the first successful hunt of the winter. During these times, daily work is set aside in favor of feasting, dancing, sporting contests, and elaborate storytelling sessions.

16.2 Additional Festivals & Celebrations

  • The Gathering of Clans (Klanmot): Held once every three years during the height of summer at Frosthold, this is the largest and most important event in the Frostborn calendar. All clans send delegations, and the festival lasts for a full week. It includes the Council of Chiefs meetings, inter-clan trade fairs, athletic competitions, storytelling tournaments, and the rare inter-clan marriages. The Klanmot is the only time when the entirety of the Frostborn people can be said to be truly united.
  • The Icebreaker's Festival: Celebrated at the onset of the Thawing, this festival marks the first day when meltwater begins to flow. The youngest children of each clan are given small ice hammers and ceremonially strike the first cracks in the winter ice covering the communal water cisterns. This is followed by a feast of the last winter provisions, symbolizing the end of scarcity and the beginning of abundance.
  • The Night of Ancestors (Forfadrenatt): Held during the autumn equinox, this solemn occasion honors the dead. Each family carves a small ice figure representing a departed loved one and places it outside the longhouse. Shamans chant the names of the dead while the clan gathers around bonfires fueled by icebark wood, whose smoke is believed to carry messages to the spirit world. Stories of the honored dead are told until dawn.
  • The Starfall Vigil: On rare occasions when meteor showers are visible through the polar sky, the Frostborn gather on high ground to watch. They believe these falling stars are fragments of Aurelia's crown, and any Frostborn who spots the first meteor of the shower is granted the right to make a request of the Council of Chiefs that must be heard.

16.3 Rites of Passage

Beyond the Glacial Rite, the Frostborn mark several key life transitions with specific ceremonies:

  • The Frost Naming: Performed on the third day after birth, when the shaman reads ice crystal patterns to divine the child's nature and bestow a name.
  • The First Hunt: A young Frostborn's first successful hunt, regardless of the size of the prey. The kill is presented to the clan and shared communally, with the young hunter receiving the first portion.
  • The Rune-Taking: When an apprentice runescribe successfully inscribes their first permanent rune, they are recognized as a practitioner and granted access to the clan's runic library.
  • The Elder's Mantle: When a Frostborn of advanced years formally takes on the role of Elder, they receive a specially crafted cloak of frost wolf fur and are granted a seat in the Elder's circle.
  • The Cold Walk (Final Rite): When a Frostborn nears death, they may choose to walk into the wastes alone rather than die in their bed. This is seen not as suicide but as a return to the ice from which they were born, and those who take the Cold Walk are honored as having died with the greatest dignity.
