Fauna, Companions & Familiars
15.1 Role of Animals in Eldorian Life
Animals play a significant role in Eldorian life. Many Eldorians form close bonds with animal companions, especially with creatures like hawks, wolves, or horses. These animals are not just pets, but partners and friends.
15.2 Key Fauna
- Silvertail Deer: These graceful creatures are larger than ordinary deer and are known for their shimmering, silver-furred tails. They are considered sacred and are never hunted; instead, they are honored during the Autumn Harvest festival.
- Songbirds: Eldoria is home to numerous species of songbirds, whose melodious voices are said to carry magical messages. Rangers train certain songbirds as scouts and alarm systems.
- Ironbark Stags: Massive deer with antlers as hard as ironbark wood. Bull stags serve as mounts for the Greenwood Rangers, capable of leaping fallen trunks and navigating dense undergrowth at speed.
- Moonmoths: Large, luminous moths that emerge at dusk and follow the moonflower blooms. Their wing-dust has mild sedative properties and is used by healers.
- Forest Wolves: Silver-furred wolves that form lifelong bonds with Eldorian rangers. They patrol alongside their partners and can sense magical disturbances.
- Thornback Boars: Stocky, armored boars whose quill-covered backs deter predators. Domesticated for their ability to root out truffles and rare herbs.
- Whisperwings: Tiny, jewel-colored hummingbird-like creatures used as enchanted messengers. They are attuned to a single owner and can carry small scrolls or spoken messages over great distances.
15.3 Rare and Mythical Creatures
- Verdant Stag of the Heart Grove: A singular, ancient creature said to be as old as the forest itself. Its antlers branch like a great tree and glow faintly with green-gold light. Sighting the Verdant Stag is considered a blessing; druids believe it only appears when the forest is in perfect balance.
- Gloomweavers: Rare, large arachnids found only in the deepest, oldest parts of the forest. Unlike common Duskweavers, Gloomweavers spin webs that can ensnare magical energy, making their lairs dangerous even for experienced druids. Their silk is extraordinarily valuable but nearly impossible to harvest safely.
15.4 Companion Bonding Rituals
The bond between an Eldorian and their animal companion is formalized through a ceremony called the Kindred Rite, performed before a druid at one of the Elemental Shrines. During the rite, the Eldorian and the animal share a magical link that allows them to sense each other's emotions and general location. The bond is considered sacred and lasts for the lifetime of the animal.
