Fauna, Companions & Familiars

The Dragon Empire's most significant fauna are the dragons themselves in their ecological roles, but the volcanic landscape supports a wider community of fire-adapted species that have co-evolved alongside dragonkind for millennia.

Ember-Wolves — large, heat-resistant canids whose thick pelts are layered with mineral deposits — roam the Ashen Plains in packs, scavenging mineral outflows and serving as early-warning systems for approaching volcanic activity through behaviors dragons have learned to read over centuries. Thorn the Beastmaster maintains the empire's only formal breeding program for Ember-Wolves, having domesticated a line that serves alongside Order of the Scaled Guardians patrols.

Lava-Crabs inhabit the margins of active lava flows, their silica-reinforced shells impervious to moderate thermal exposure. Magma Drakes regard them with a form of cultural affection — their presence near a flow indicates stable lava chemistry, and their disappearance is taken as a warning sign requiring immediate Magma-Core inspection. Crystal-Wyverns, distant draconic relatives with vestigial wings, nest in the Drakon Range's crystal-cave systems, their scales naturally capturing and refracting light in ways that make them useful living navigational markers within the cave networks.

Drake-Riders form the empire's most distinctive companion bond: a mortal and dragon pair whose partnership is solemnized before the Elder Dragon Council and registered in the Crystal Archive. The bond is for life and carries legal weight — a Drake-Rider may speak on their dragon's behalf in the Drakonian Senate, and a dragon may veto any assignment deemed harmful to their bonded rider. Aether Drakes, who form the rarest such bonds, are known to develop a mild telepathic attunement with their riders over decades.
