Social Structure & Interaction
Aurixian society is stratified by age, power, and the luminosity of a dragon's living sigil. The hierarchy runs from Hatchling at the base — dependent, learning, not yet bearing legal standing — through Fledgling, Drake, and Elder, each stage conferring progressively greater authority and responsibility within the imperial structure. Ancients stand outside this hierarchy altogether; their status is beyond rank, and interaction with an Ancient is governed by a separate protocol codified in the Codex of Scales.
Mortal Drakonians occupy a parallel hierarchy anchored in the noble house and guild system. Noble houses derive authority from historical service charters granted by Wyrm-Keepers; guild masters from demonstrated craft excellence certified by Shard-Guild councils. Neither lineage nor birth alone confers high status among Drakonians — demonstrated loyalty to the empire's founding tenets and measurable contribution to the Shard-Guild economy are the operative criteria for advancement.
Social interaction between dragons and mortals is governed by the Protocol of Scaled Address, a formalized system of spatial and tonal conventions: a Drakonian addresses an Elder from a lower physical elevation, uses the honorific flame-greeting, and never initiates direct eye contact without permission. Drake-Rider bonds create the empire's most intimate cross-caste relationship, as bonded riders may address their dragons informally and in return are extended a degree of draconic social standing equivalent to a senior Drakonian guild master. Fractured interactions — such as those involving the Drakorian Rebel Clans — expose the tensions in this system, as rebel leaders argue that Drakonian mortals deserve equal political standing with Elders, a claim the Elder Dragon Council has thus far declined to recognize formally.
