Architecture & Infrastructure
21.1 Underwater Temples & Sacred Sites
- The Abyssal Cathedral
A vast, deep-sea temple dedicated to Abyssus. Carved into the walls of a massive underwater trench and lit by the eerie glow of bioluminescent organisms, it is a place of primal mystery and raw, creative energy.
- The Tidal Pools of Cascadia
A series of interconnected, shallow pools dedicated to Cascadia. The pools rise and fall with the tides, creating intricate patterns and rhythms that the Nereids use for meditation, divination, and attunement to the cycles of the sea.
- The Coral Palace of Nereus
A grand, sprawling structure dedicated to Nereus. Built entirely from living coral of every color and shape, it is a testament to the beauty, diversity, and resilience of the shallows.
- The Echoing Grotto of Delphina
A submerged cavern, filled with crystalline formations and ethereal echoes, dedicated to Delphina. It is a place of inspiration and artistic expression, where Nereids come to create, perform, and share their works with the community.
- The Cetacean Shrines
Simple, elegant structures scattered throughout the oceans, often in areas frequented by whales and dolphins. Dedicated to Cetus, they serve as focal points for communion with these wise creatures.
21.2 Civic Architecture
Nereid homes and public buildings are carved into coral and giant shells, with flowing, organic shapes that mirror natural reef formations. The Great Coral Chamber serves as both seat of government and performance hall. Market plazas are open spaces within the reef where current-channels allow easy navigation between stalls.
21.3 Design Philosophy
All Nereid construction is based on living architecture: buildings are grown rather than built, shaped by coral magic over years or decades. Structures self-repair, adapt to changing conditions, and eventually return to the reef when no longer needed.
21.4 Infrastructure Systems
Bubble chambers for air-breathing visitors, current-channels for rapid transit between city districts, bioluminescent street lighting, shell-based communication relay stations, and coral-filtered water purification systems.
21.5 Notable Architectural Works
- The Grand Conservatory of Pelagara
A spiraling structure of interlocking coral chambers, each tuned to different acoustic frequencies. Its central performance hall can seat 5,000 and produces natural reverberations that enhance any musical performance. - The Archive of Tides
The largest coral library in Nereidum, located in the Coral Metropolis. Its shelves are living coral formations that grow new branches to accommodate new knowledge. The Archive spans seventeen interconnected chambers, each dedicated to a different field of study. - The Coralhaven Bubble-Markets
An engineering marvel at the surface-trade boundary, where hundreds of individually sealed air-bubbles allow surface merchants to conduct business while surrounded by the ocean. Current-powered lifts transport goods between the underwater loading docks and the surface-accessible trading floors.
