Origin & Development
9.1 Creation Myth / Founding Story
According to legend, the first Nereids were born from the tears of joy shed by the sea when the world was young and filled with wonder. A more detailed creation account, preserved in the temples of the Deep Gods, tells that in the beginning there was only the vast, dark expanse of the primordial ocean. From the depths of this infinite sea, the first ripples of life emerged
Abyssus and Cascadia, born from the currents of creation and the tides of existence.
As Abyssus and Cascadia swam through the primordial waters, their movements stirred the oceans and brought forth the other Deep Gods
Nereus, rising from the first coral reefs; Delphina, emerging from the first shimmering schools of fish; and Cetus, born from the songs of the first whales. Together, the Deep Gods began to shape the oceans, crafting the intricate underwater landscapes, the complex ecosystems, and the myriad forms of marine life. They created the tides to move the waters, the currents to distribute life, and the cycles of the moon to guide the rhythms of the sea.
However, the oceans were vast and empty, lacking beings to appreciate their beauty and to steward their resources. And so, the Deep Gods gathered the essence of the sea
the foam of the waves, the glow of bioluminescence, and the strength of the currents
and from these elements, they formed the first Nereids. The Nereids awoke to a world of underwater wonders, a realm of vibrant coral reefs, mysterious deep-sea trenches, and shimmering schools of fish. The Deep Gods bestowed upon them the gift of aquatic adaptation, the love for the sea and all its creatures, and the responsibility to maintain balance and harmony within the ocean's ecosystems.
9.2 Cosmological Context
The Celestials created the first beings to inhabit Landorya: Dragons, Nereids, Sylvan creatures, and the Aeriels. Each species was given a realm and a role. The Nereids became the stewards of the waters, taking their first breath in the depths of the shimmering seas. Humans were created last, gifted with curiosity, ambition, and free will.
9.3 Societal Evolution & Abilities
Over time, the Nereids developed their water magic abilities and built their coral cities to create havens of art and beauty beneath the waves. Nereid culture evolved around their love for the sea and their passion for artistic expression. They developed unique abilities like water breathing and sonic magic. From that day forward, the Nereids have built their shining kingdoms beneath the waves, tending to the gardens of coral, communicating with the creatures of the sea, and honoring the Deep Gods through their art, their music, and their stewardship of the ocean's bounty.
9.4 Key Challenges & Triumphs
The Nereids have faced threats from sea monsters and pollution, but have always persevered through their creativity and connection to the sea. Ancient structures and artifacts have periodically emerged from the sea floor, hinting at long-lost civilizations with advanced technology and mysterious intentions, presenting both opportunities and dangers for the Nereid people.
9.5 Historical Eras
- The Primal Age
The era of the Deep Gods' creation, when Nereidum was shaped from raw ocean and the first Nereids emerged. Few records survive from this period; knowledge is preserved primarily in sacred song-cycles passed down through temple singers. - The Age of Reefs
The period of initial expansion, when Nereids spread across the ocean floor and founded the first coral settlements. The Coral Metropolis was established during this era, as was the Pearl Court's earliest predecessor council. - The Age of Song
A golden age of artistic and magical achievement in which the foundations of Nereid musical culture were laid. The Grand Conservatory of Pelagara was founded, and the first inter-racial cultural exchanges occurred. - The Age of Tides
The current era, defined by increasing interaction with surface civilizations, the drafting of the Ocean Accords, and growing challenges from pollution and ecological degradation. The Nereids have become more diplomatically active than at any point in their history.
