Environmental Protection & Ecology

24.1 Overview

InitiativeDetails
Ministry of Ocean HarmonyThe governmental body responsible for coordinating all environmental protection efforts across Nereidum. Monitors pollution levels, species populations, and ecosystem health.
Coral Reef RestorationThe annual Coral Planting Ceremony is both a religious ritual and an ecological intervention. Nereids plant new coral polyps, remove debris and parasites, and use Coral Shaping magic to repair damaged reef sections.
Current MonitoringSpecialized Nereids track changes in ocean currents that might indicate pollution, climate shifts, or magical disturbances. Early warning systems alert coastal settlements to approaching storms or ecological threats.
Anti-Pollution AdvocacyNereids actively campaign against surface-nation practices that pollute the ocean. They have imposed trade restrictions on nations that dump waste into the sea and offer technical assistance for developing cleaner practices.
Sustainable HarvestingAll resource extraction in Nereidum follows strict rotational schedules. Kelp forests, fishing grounds, and mineral deposits are harvested on multi-year cycles to allow full regeneration.
Deep-Sea PreservationThe abyssal zones are considered sacred and largely off-limits to resource extraction. Only the Deep Dive Vigil participants and authorized researchers are permitted in these areas.
Visitor ProtocolsAll visitors to Nereidum must follow strict environmental guidelines. A Nereid guide accompanies every visitor group, and infractions result in immediate expulsion and potential trade sanctions against the visitor's home nation.

24.2 The Reef Census

Every five years, the Ministry of Ocean Harmony conducts a comprehensive census of reef health across all Nereid territories. Teams of Reef Tenders, Coral Shapers, and ecological scholars survey every major reef system, cataloging species populations, coral growth rates, water quality, and magical energy levels. The census results are presented to the Pearl Court and inform resource allocation, harvesting quotas, and environmental policy for the next five-year cycle. The most recent census identified declining populations of Pearlback Turtles in the northern waters, prompting the establishment of new protected zones.

24.3 Pollution Response Protocols

When pollution from surface nations reaches Nereid waters, the Ministry of Ocean Harmony activates a rapid-response protocol. Current Weavers redirect contaminated water into containment zones, while Healing Tides practitioners treat affected marine life. Diplomatic protests are filed through the Ambassador of the Waves, and trade sanctions are imposed on the offending nation if the pollution is deliberate or repeated. In severe cases, the Pearl Court authorizes the Coral Guard to physically blockade the source of contamination.
