Geography & Settlements

7.1 Key Locations & Habitats

  • Nereidum
The collective name for all underwater Nereid kingdoms, spanning vast stretches of ocean floor.
  • The Coral Metropolis
The largest Nereid city, built into and around a massive living reef system. Home to the Pearl Court and the Great Coral Chamber.
  • The Abyssal Gardens
Deep-sea cultivation areas where rare plants and organisms are tended in the perpetual darkness of the ocean floor.
  • The Shallows District
Coastal reef areas where trade with surface nations occurs and visitors are received.
  • The Thermal Vents Quarter
A settlement built around deep-sea geothermal vents, serving as an energy production hub and research center.

7.2 Named Cities & Settlements

  • Pelagara
The second-largest Nereid city, built within a vast undersea canyon whose walls are honeycombed with dwellings, workshops, and galleries. Pelagara is renowned as the center of Nereid musical education; the Grand Conservatory of Pelagara trains the finest Sonar-Singers and instrument-makers in Nereidum.
  • Luminara
A mid-depth city famous for its bioluminescent gardens and the annual Festival of Living Light. Built on a flat seamount, Luminara's architecture emphasizes open plazas and wide current-channels that allow lanternfish swarms to flow through the city like rivers of light.
  • Thalassheim
A fortified settlement on the Obsidian Shelf near the Drakonian border. Thalassheim serves as the primary military outpost of the Coral Guard and the seat of the Tide Wardens' regional command. Despite its martial purpose, the city maintains a thriving artistic community, and its soldiers are known for their war-songs.
  • Deepwell
A small, isolated research station built around a cluster of geothermal vents in the abyssal plain. Deepwell's scholars study the primal energies of the deep ocean, cultivate Abyssal Lotus, and maintain the oldest Nereid records of tectonic and volcanic activity.
  • Coralhaven
A shallow-water trading settlement at the boundary between Nereidum and the Shimmering Isles. Coralhaven's bubble-markets are the primary point of commercial exchange between the Nereids and surface traders. The city is governed jointly by a Nereid administrator and an Islander trade consul.

7.3 Sacred Natural Sites

  • The Singing Rift
A deep oceanic trench where natural geological forces produce resonant harmonic tones. Nereids believe the Singing Rift is the voice of Abyssus himself, and pilgrimages to its edge are considered a rite of spiritual deepening. Only those who have completed the Rite of the Current may descend into the rift itself.
  • The Moonpool Shallows
A series of shallow lagoons where moonlight penetrates to the sandy floor, creating pools of silver illumination. Sacred to Cascadia, the Moonpool Shallows are the site of the most important Tidal Communion ceremonies. Moonkelp grows in abundance here.
  • The Pearlmother Reef
An ancient, massive reef formation believed to be the birthplace of the first Nereids. The reef is strictly protected; no harvesting, construction, or alteration of any kind is permitted. Elders make pilgrimages to the Pearlmother Reef at the end of their lives to sing their final songs into the coral.

7.4 Climate & Weather Patterns

The deep sea climate of Nereidum is cool and dark, with warming currents near thermal vents and cold currents from the depths. Temperature varies significantly between the sunlit shallows and the abyssal zones. Powerful undersea storms can disrupt settlements, particularly during winter months when surface storms generate turbulent currents that reach the ocean floor.

7.5 Fauna & Flora

Nereidum is home to a vast array of sea life, from colorful reef fish to giant sea monsters. Plants include waving kelp forests and glowing deep-sea flowers. Seavine is a versatile underwater plant used for food, medicine, and crafting.

Dominant Animals
The Tidal Whales are massive, intelligent creatures that the Nereids often communicate with. They serve as both companions and messengers across the vast ocean distances.

Dominant Plants
Seavine is the most important plant in Nereid civilization, used for food, medicine, and crafting materials. Kelp forests provide habitat for countless species and raw materials for sea silk production.

7.6 Natural Resources

Nereidum's natural resources include pearls, sea crystals, unique underwater plants and animals, coral, bioluminescent organisms, and deep-sea minerals found near thermal vents.

7.7 Architecture & Living Spaces

Nereid cities are carved into coral reefs and giant seashells, with bubble-like structures for air-breathing visitors. Architecture incorporates organic shapes and bioluminescent lighting. Homes and public buildings feature flowing, organic forms that mirror the natural structures of the reef.

Design Principles
Nereid architecture follows three core principles: integration with the living reef (never killing coral to build), tidal resilience (structures that flex with currents rather than resist them), and aesthetic harmony (every building is considered a work of art).
