23.1 Deep Magic System

ComponentDetails
Deep Magic SystemThe Nereids are renowned for their mastery of Deep Magic, a powerful form of magic that draws its energy from the primal forces of the ocean, the cycles of the tides, and the life-force of marine creatures.
Tidal ManipulationThe ability to control and shape the movement of water, from gentle currents to powerful tidal waves. Used for navigation, defense, and reshaping underwater landscapes.
Bioluminescence MagicThe art of creating and manipulating living light. Bioluminescent mages can create mesmerizing displays, illuminate the depths, or communicate over vast distances using patterns of glowing algae.
Coral ShapingThe ability to influence the growth and form of coral. Coral shapers create intricate underwater structures, heal damaged reefs, and use coral as a medium for artistic expression. This is the foundation of all Nereid architecture.
Cetacean CommunicationThe ability to understand and communicate with whales, dolphins, and other cetaceans. Those skilled in this art can gather information, request aid, or convey complex ideas and emotions across the vast expanses of the ocean.
Abyssal AttunementThe ability to tap into the primal, creative energies of the deep ocean. Abyssal mages can draw upon the power of the depths to fuel their spells, to create or destroy, or to glimpse the fundamental mysteries of existence.
Sonar-SingingA unique Nereid discipline that combines music, magic, and communication. Sonar-Singers can detect objects and creatures through echolocation, project magical effects through song, and even influence emotions and thoughts through carefully crafted melodies.

23.2 Magical Artifacts

Nereids create powerful talismans from sea treasures and use songs in their magical rituals. Notable artifacts include the Necklace of Water Breathing (crafted from sea crystals and enchanted with powerful water magic, allowing the wearer to breathe underwater) and the Fragment of Tides (a component of a legendary amulet). Enchanted nautical charms for safe passage are a common trade good.

23.3 Ley Lines of the Deep

Nereid scholars have mapped a network of magical energy currents flowing through the ocean floor, which they call the Deep Currents. These currents function similarly to surface ley lines but carry distinctly aquatic magical properties. Major intersections of Deep Currents, called Confluence Points, are sites of extraordinary magical potency. The Coral Metropolis, the Abyssal Cathedral, and the Singing Rift are all located at Confluence Points, which scholars believe is not coincidental. Tidal Mages draw upon the Deep Currents to amplify their spells, and navigators use them as landmarks for long-distance orientation.

23.4 Forbidden Magic

Certain magical practices are strictly prohibited by Nereid law, their use punishable by exile or the Silence. Tidal Disruption
the deliberate manipulation of major ocean currents
is the most serious offense, as it can devastate entire ecosystems and destabilize weather patterns across continents. Abyssal Summoning without proper wards risks unleashing creatures from the deepest trenches that even the Coral Guard cannot contain. Blood-Tide magic, which draws power from the death of marine creatures, is considered the darkest perversion of Deep Magic and is believed to have been used by the lost civilizations whose ruins periodically surface from the ocean floor.
