Daily Life

11.1 Morning Routines

Nereids start their day by singing to the sea and checking the tides and currents. Morning tide watching and singing is an important daily ritual for greeting the sea. This communal practice, performed at the edges of each coral city, sets the emotional tone for the day and keeps the community attuned to the ocean's rhythms.

11.2 Midday Activities

Most Nereids spend their days practicing their art, whether that is music, dance, sculpture, or another form. Artisans work in studios carved into the reef, while farmers tend kelp gardens and foragers explore the surrounding waters.

11.3 Afternoon Gatherings

Afternoons often involve community gatherings or collaborative art projects. These artistic collaborations and performances serve as both social events and opportunities for creative development. Markets open in the central plazas of coral cities, where goods are traded and news is shared.

11.4 Evening Traditions

Evenings are spent in musical performances or storytelling. Evening storytelling is both a social activity and a way of passing down cultural traditions. Families gather in communal halls or private coral chambers for meals and conversation.

11.5 Nighttime Pursuits

Some Nereids specialize in night diving and creating art with bioluminescent creatures. The deep ocean comes alive after dark with glowing organisms, and Nereid artists work with these living lights to create ephemeral displays of extraordinary beauty.

11.6 Special Occasions

Tidal changes and whale migrations are causes for grand celebrations. Major tides and lunar events are celebrated with grand artistic displays and underwater feasts.

11.7 Clothing & Adornment

Nereids wear flowing garments made from sea silk, often adorned with pearls and sea shells. Formal attire features elaborate pearl-work and luminescent thread that glows softly in the deep water. Everyday garments are woven from driftveil and seavine fiber, dyed with natural pigments extracted from sea anemones and mineral deposits. Warriors of the Coral Guard wear ironshell-plate armor layered over sea silk padding.

11.8 Cuisine & Dining

Nereid cuisine features seafood, seaweed, and dishes flavored with underwater herbs and spices. Meals are prepared using thermal vent cooking, cold-fermentation techniques, and raw preparations that highlight the freshness of ocean ingredients. Signature dishes include kelp-wrapped shellfish steamed over thermal vents, tideblossom pollen cakes, moonkelp broth, and fermented sea-grape wine aged in sealed coral vessels. Communal dining is the norm; families and neighbors share meals in open reef kitchens.

11.9 Travel & Transportation

Nereids love to explore the vast oceans, but always return to their coral cities. They travel by swimming, riding currents, or mounting trained sea creatures for longer journeys. The Current-Lanes
major ocean currents mapped and maintained by the Guild of the Current
serve as underwater highways connecting all major settlements. Travel between distant cities may take several days, during which travelers rest at waystation reefs maintained along the routes.
