Economy & Craft

14.1 Overview

AspectDetails
CurrencyPearl-Standard
the Nereid economy uses graded pearls as currency, classified by size, luster, and magical resonance. High-value transactions involve Tide-Bonds, magically binding agreements inscribed on coral tablets.
Core CraftsPearl jewelry, sea silk weaving, coral carving, enchanted nautical charms, bioluminescent art installations, musical instrument crafting (from shells and coral), and underwater architecture.
ExportsPearls, sea silk garments, magical sea artifacts, enchanted nautical charms, coral sculptures, musical compositions (encoded in shell recordings), medicinal seaweed preparations, and sea crystals.
ImportsMetals (critical
unavailable underwater), land-grown timber, surface herbs and spices, stone, textiles, and alchemical compounds from surface nations.
Trade RoutesCurrent-Lanes (underwater highways following natural ocean currents) connecting Nereid cities, and Surface Ports (sheltered coastal locations where Nereid traders meet surface merchants). The Nomads of Aurora serve as important inland trade intermediaries.
GuildsGuild of the Pearl (jewelry and gem work), Guild of the Tide-Weavers (sea silk production), Guild of Coral Architects (construction and sculpture), Guild of the Song (music and performance), and Guild of the Current (navigation and trade).

14.2 Guild Structure & Regulation

Each guild is led by a Grand Master elected by the guild's senior practitioners. Guilds set quality standards, regulate apprenticeship programs, arbitrate commercial disputes, and represent their craft's interests before the Pearl Court. Membership in a guild is not mandatory but provides significant advantages: access to communal workshops, trade networks, and the guild's accumulated technical knowledge. Inter-guild cooperation is coordinated through the Council of Crafts, a body composed of all five Grand Masters that meets quarterly to resolve resource conflicts and plan joint projects.

14.3 The Pearl-Standard Economy

The Pearl-Standard currency system operates on three tiers: seed-pearls (small, common pearls used for everyday transactions), craft-pearls (medium-grade pearls of notable luster, used for significant purchases), and sovereign-pearls (rare, magically resonant pearls used for inter-city and international trade). The Pearl Court's Treasury maintains a reserve of sovereign-pearls and issues Tide-Bonds for large-scale public works. Counterfeiting is nearly impossible because each pearl's unique magical signature is verifiable by any trained Nereid.

14.4 Coralhaven Market

The busiest commercial hub in Nereidum is the Coralhaven Market, located at the boundary with the Shimmering Isles. Here, Nereid traders meet surface merchants in bubble-enclosed market stalls that accommodate both air-breathers and water-breathers. Goods flow in both directions: metals, timber, and surface-world luxuries enter Nereidum, while pearls, sea silk, coral art, and enchanted charms flow to the surface. The market operates year-round, though winter storms occasionally force temporary closures.
