Environmental Protection & Ecology
Interaction with the Environment
Drakonians see their harsh environment as a crucible that forges them into the strongest of races. While they strive to conquer and control their surroundings, they have developed a pragmatic understanding of the need to maintain the volcanic ecosystems that sustain them.
Volcanic Stewardship
The Ministry of Draconic Affairs, in cooperation with the dragon population, monitors volcanic activity across Drakon. Dragons instinctively sense shifts in the deep earth, and their warnings have saved Drakonian cities from catastrophic eruptions on multiple occasions. The Drakonians have learned to work with volcanic cycles rather than against them, timing their construction and mining operations to periods of relative calm.
Dragon Population Management
The Rite of the Hatching is not merely ceremonial but serves a practical ecological function. By blessing and bonding with dragon hatchlings, the Drakonians ensure that the dragon population remains stable and that feral, unbonded dragons do not multiply beyond what the volcanic ecosystem can support.
Resource Management
While Drakonians are aggressive miners and metalworkers, the finite nature of their volcanic resources has taught them the value of efficiency. Draconic Fire-forging, while consuming dragon-flame, produces weapons and armor of such exceptional quality that they rarely need replacement, reducing overall resource consumption. Geothermal energy provides a renewable power source that reduces the need for destructive fuel harvesting.
Flora Conservation
The hardy flameweed and other fire-resistant plants of Drakon are carefully cultivated, as they provide essential medicine, spices, and ritual materials. Drakonian herbalists maintain gardens in the cooler slopes of dormant volcanoes, ensuring a steady supply of these valuable plants.
The Ashbloom Preserves
After centuries of haphazard harvesting nearly drove the Ashbloom to extinction, the Obsidian Order established protected zones known as the Ashbloom Preserves
areas of recent volcanic deposits where the rare plant is allowed to grow undisturbed. Only priests of Tiamat are permitted to harvest Ashbloom within the preserves, and then only during specific ritual periods. This early conservation effort is considered one of the more surprising aspects of Drakonian culture by outsiders, who often assume the warlike race has no interest in ecological preservation.
