The volcanic regions of Drakon, with towering peaks and vast underground lava tubes. Drakon is a volcanic, mountainous region.

Terrain and Climate

Habitat and Architecture
Drakonian cities are built into the sides of volcanoes or underground, with structures made of obsidian and steel. Architecture is angular and imposing, designed to withstand the elements.

Climate
The climate of Drakon is hot and arid, with frequent volcanic activity and ash falls.

Flora and Fauna

Fauna & Flora
Drakon is home to fire-breathing drakes, lava worms, and other creatures adapted to the extreme heat. Plants are few but hardy, often with fire-resistant properties.

Dominant Animals
The dragons are the most iconic creatures of Drakon, with the Drakonians having tamed some of these mighty beasts.

Dominant Plants
Flameweed is a resilient plant used for medicine and as a spice.

Natural Resources
Drakon's natural resources include precious metals, gems, and the geothermal energy of the volcanoes.

Named Flora of Drakon

  • Flameweed (Ignis Herba): The most common and versatile plant in Drakon. Its thick, waxy leaves are resistant to extreme heat and contain oils used for medicine, cooking, and lamp fuel. Flameweed spice is a prized export.
  • Cindervine (Pyrus Scandentia): A climbing plant that grows on cooled lava flows, anchoring itself with heat-resistant tendrils. Its berries, harvested during the autumn, are fermented into Ashberry Mead, the traditional drink of Drakonian feasts.
  • Magmaroot (Radix Ignea): A deep-rooted tuber found growing near geothermal vents. It absorbs mineral-rich water from volcanic springs, making it a vital source of nutrients in the otherwise barren landscape. Magmaroot stew is a staple of common Drakonian cuisine.
  • Ashbloom (Flos Cineris): A rare flowering plant that blooms only in the aftermath of eruptions, emerging from fresh ash deposits. Its silvery petals are used in sacred rituals dedicated to Tiamat and are believed to carry the goddess's blessing.
  • Embermoss (Musca Pyralis): A bioluminescent moss that grows in the Ember Caverns, emitting a soft orange glow. It serves as a natural light source in underground passages and is cultivated for decorative purposes in Drakonian homes.

Named Fauna of Drakon

  • Caldera Hawks: Large raptors with heat-resistant plumage that nest in the craters of dormant volcanoes. They are trained as messenger birds by the Obsidian Order.
  • Sulfur Beetles: Armored insects the size of a fist that feed on mineral deposits around volcanic vents. Their iridescent shells are collected and used as inlays in decorative armor.
  • Volcanic Salamanders: Amphibious creatures that thrive in hot springs and lava-adjacent pools. They are kept as pets by young Drakonians and are considered good luck.
  • Ashland Boars: Stocky, tusked beasts with thick, fireproof hides that roam the lower slopes. They are the primary source of meat for Drakonian settlements.
  • Pyrewolves: Pack hunters with ember-colored fur and the ability to exhale superheated breath. Domesticated Pyrewolves serve as guard animals and hunting companions, particularly in settlements far from dragon nesting grounds.

Key Settlements

  • The Obsidian Citadel: Built within the caldera of an active volcano, this massive black glass fortress serves as both the primary seat of the Obsidian Order and the main center of worship for Ignatius. It houses the Eternal Flame, said to have been burning since the dawn of time.
  • Forgepeak: The largest industrial city, home to the greatest concentration of Drakonian forges. Its foundries produce the majority of Drakonian weapons and armor, and the rhythmic hammering of its smiths can be heard echoing across the volcanic plains.
  • Drakescale Hold: A fortified settlement built around one of the largest dragon nesting grounds in Drakon. It serves as the headquarters of the Ministry of Draconic Affairs and the primary training ground for dragon riders.
  • The Five-Spired Sanctuary: A grand temple complex featuring five towering spires dedicated to the five elemental dragon clans, serving as the religious heart of Drakonian civilization.

Additional Named Settlements

  • Umbraholm: The seat of the shadow clan, built within a network of lightless caverns beneath a dormant volcano known as the Black Spire. Umbraholm is the training ground for the Shadow Stalkers and houses the largest Voidsteel forges in Drakon. Its inhabitants are known for their reserved, secretive nature, even by Drakonian standards.
  • Cinderharbor: The only Drakonian port city, situated on the coast where the volcanic highlands meet the Ashen Sea. Cinderharbor serves as the primary point of contact for Islander trade ships and is the most cosmopolitan settlement in Drakon, home to a small but permanent population of foreign merchants and diplomats.
  • Wyrmrest Spire: A towering citadel built atop a basalt column overlooking the Valley of Smoke. It serves as the headquarters of the Dragon Wardens and contains the largest collection of dragon genealogical records in Landorya.
  • Ironmaw Pass: A fortified mountain pass that serves as the primary overland route into Drakon. Controlled by the Stone Wardens, it is the most heavily defended non-capital settlement in the region.
  • Ashveil Outpost: A remote garrison on the edge of the Ashen Barrens, serving as the staging point for mining expeditions into the cursed lands. It is considered one of the least desirable postings in the Drakonian military.
