Physical Characteristics
Drakonians are tall and muscular, with skin tones ranging from deep red to charcoal black, often with scale-like patterns. They have sharp features, slitted eyes, and often sport horns or spiky protrusions on their skin. Some can even sprout wings, though flight is rare.
Physiology and Draconic Traits
Lifespan & Reproduction
Drakonians have low birth rates but long lifespans. Their lean population is concentrated in fortress cities across the volcanic highlands of Drakon. The combination of draconic blood and volcanic environment has forged a physiology that is naturally resistant to extreme heat, toxic fumes, and the corrosive atmosphere of active volcanic regions. Their scale-like skin patterns are believed to be a physical manifestation of the draconic blessing bestowed upon the first Drakonians by Ignatius and Tiamat. The depth and color of these patterns often indicate the elemental clan affinity of the individual: crimson for fire, slate-blue for water, obsidian for shadow, ash-gray for air, and deep brown for earth.
Height and Build
Adult Drakonians stand between 6'2" and 7'4", with the tallest individuals typically belonging to the fire and earth clans. Their muscular builds reflect a lifetime of martial training and forge-work. Drakonian bones are denser than those of most races, reinforced by trace minerals absorbed from the volcanic environment during childhood, making them exceptionally resistant to blunt force trauma.
Horns and Protrusions
Drakonian horns begin to emerge during adolescence, typically around the age of twelve, and continue growing throughout the individual's life. The shape and curvature of the horns are hereditary within clan lines
fire clan members tend toward swept-back, ridged horns, while shadow clan members develop more jagged, asymmetrical formations. Horns are a source of great pride, and Drakonians often adorn them with metal caps, rings, or inscriptions commemorating significant achievements.
Wings and Flight
Approximately one in every hundred Drakonians develops functional wings, a trait considered a direct blessing from Tiamat. These winged Drakonians, known as "Vyrathi" (sky-touched), are revered and often serve in elevated military or religious roles. True sustained flight remains exceedingly rare, occurring in perhaps one in a thousand individuals, but even limited gliding ability confers tremendous tactical advantage. The most famous winged Drakonian was General Kaelith Stormwing, who commanded the aerial defense of the Obsidian Citadel during the Third Eruption War.
Sensory Abilities
Drakonians possess enhanced thermal vision, allowing them to see heat signatures in complete darkness
an invaluable ability in the smoke-filled caverns and lava tubes of their homeland. Their sense of smell is also heightened, particularly for detecting sulfuric compounds and metallic ores. Some Drakonians develop a sensitivity to seismic vibrations through the soles of their feet, enabling them to sense approaching eruptions or underground movement.
