Language & Symbols
The Drakonian language is harsh and guttural, filled with words for battle, fire, and honor. It descends from the ancient Draconic tongue spoken by the first dragons and retains many of its primal, resonant qualities. When spoken at full volume, Drakonian speech can cause the air to shimmer with heat, a remnant of the magical nature of Draconic speech.
Writing System
Drakonians inscribe their records on fire-etched metal plates, using angular glyphs that resemble claw marks. Each glyph carries both a phonetic value and a symbolic meaning, making Drakonian texts layered with hidden significance. Important documents are etched onto obsidian tablets using dragonfire, rendering them virtually indestructible.
Symbols and Iconography
The most sacred symbol is the Five-Pointed Flame, representing the five elemental dragon clans united under the banner of Ignatius. Other common motifs include the Obsidian Crown (symbol of the Obsidian Order), the Dragon Eye (a slitted pupil surrounded by flame, representing Dragonsight), and the Forgehammer (symbol of Drakonian craftsmanship). Clan banners display the elemental affinity of each family, and personal sigils are earned through great deeds.
Cultural Significance of Language
Tales of great battles and heroic figures are used to inspire younger generations to strive for glory.
Key Vocabulary
Several Drakonian words have entered common usage across Landorya due to the widespread trade in Drakonian goods:
- Drakhar: Fire-forged soul; the divine spark believed to reside in every Drakonian.
- Vyrathi: Sky-touched; a winged Drakonian blessed by Tiamat.
- Khor-Azul: Literally "honor-flame"; used as both a greeting and a farewell, roughly meaning "may your fire burn bright."
- Thrazgol: The formal term for a ritual challenge or honor duel.
- Embrath: Clan-kin; a term of deep affection used between members of the same elemental clan.
- Morrakh: Shame-bearer; one who has failed the Ascension Challenge.
Battle Cries and Ritual Phrases
Before combat, Drakonian warriors recite the Oath of Ignatius: "By fire forged, by flame sustained, by dragonblood unbroken." This phrase is inscribed above the gates of every Drakonian fortress and is the first phrase taught to children entering martial training. The most feared battle cry in Landorya is "Drakon Vorethis!" ("Drakon consumes!"), a warning that the Dragon Guard has entered the field.
