Magic & Arcane Infrastructure

Draconic Magic Overview

The Drakonians are renowned for their mastery of Draconic Magic, a powerful and primal form of magic that draws its energy from the blood of dragons, the fury of the elements, and the raw, untamed power of the Drakonians' draconic heritage.

Dragonfire Manipulation

The ability to conjure, control, and shape the flames of dragonfire. Dragonfire mages can breathe torrents of flame, create walls of fire, or even forge weapons and armor from solidified dragonfire.

Elemental Attunement

The ability to tap into and manipulate the primal elements associated with the different dragon clans. Elemental mages can call upon the fury of volcanoes, the rage of storms, the resilience of stone, or the swiftness of the wind.

Dragonsight

The ability to perceive the world through the senses of a dragon, including enhanced vision, heightened senses of smell and hearing, and the ability to detect magical auras and hidden truths.

Draconic Regeneration

The ability to heal and recover from wounds at an astonishing rate, drawing upon the legendary resilience of dragonkind. Some skilled practitioners can even regenerate lost limbs or recover from near-fatal injuries.

Dragonsoul Pact

The most powerful and dangerous form of Draconic Magic, this involves a Drakonian mage forging a soul-deep pact with a willing dragon. This pact grants the mage access to immense draconic power and knowledge but also binds their fate and will to that of their dragon partner for better or for worse.

Arcane Infrastructure

The Drakonians' magical infrastructure is woven into the fabric of their civilization. The forges of Drakon are not merely workshops but arcane engines, each one inscribed with ancient draconic runes that channel volcanic heat and magical energy simultaneously. The Obsidian Citadel serves as the primary nexus of magical power, its Eternal Flame radiating a field of draconic energy that strengthens all practitioners within its range. The Serpentine Archives of Jormungandr house not only knowledge but also magical artifacts of immense power, preserved and studied by the sorcerer-priests of the Wisdom Serpent.

Historical Significance

The era of Draconic Magic saw the rise of the Dragonbinders, individuals with strong bonds to dragons. They became major political and military powers through their control of draconic magic. This period shaped the development of Drakonian society and established many of the magical traditions that persist today.

Forbidden Practices

Not all draconic magic is sanctioned by the Obsidian Order. The practice of Forcebinding
magically compelling a dragon into a bond against its will
is the most reviled crime in Drakonian law, punishable by execution via immolation in the Eternal Flame. Despite this prohibition, rumors persist of shadow-clan sorcerers experimenting with compulsion techniques in the deepest chambers of Umbraholm. The Bone Wyverns that haunt the wastelands beyond Drakon are believed to be the product of ancient Forcebinding experiments gone catastrophically wrong.
